How soul-destroying is driving Northern Virginia I-95 in a truck?

Some of the opportunities available to me as a potential new driver are driving Amazon from Richmond to points north. Which seems like it would put me in Northern Virginia traffic on a regular basis.

Driving in Northern Virginia traffic makes me insane. My kids' grandparents live in Northern Virginia. If there's no traffic, I can drive from their house to mine in 1hr 40m. If, on the other hand, there is traffic (which there is for about 18 hours out of the day), it can take me 5 hours to drive home. And three of those five hours will be spent crawling along at maybe 10 miles an hour, getting from exit 160 to exit 130.

Of course, if you drive I-95 regularly, you already know all that. So how do you deal with it? Do you get paid extra for driving in that nonsense? Are there alternate routes that let you avoid most of it? Do you just suck it up and cope?

Oh yes, as a new driver you should alway be subject to traffic free conditions only.

Traffic makes you insane; good career choice?

Some do. I'd only consider hourly compensation if they wanted me to run during daylight hours.

I used to run Trenton, Nj to Richmond daily. After the first two weeks of sitting in that mess, I decided to try 301 instead. I actually enjoyed the ride after that.

It's no more soul destroying than Chi town, Dallas, PHOENIX, Los Angeles, Portland, or any other major city during rush hours or heavy commute hours. There is one tunnel on I-10 in Phoenix. I'm only counting 5 days a week commute, 3 days a week somebody crashes in it, and screws up traffic for hours.
I haven't driven through Dallas or Chi town except for weeeeeeee hours of the morning in years.

Oh man, I almost forgot Denver, LOL, talk about your life in someone else's hands, and that extends for a good 100 miles south, and a general 50 mile radius in the other directions.

    HA!!! Love it.

I say this. Take 15, US 15 bypass DC entirely. Or 301 east of DC cross over. I always run 15 because it was my home ground. Hopped off at Fredericksburg on 133 or was it 129 at the truckstop there and picked up 15.

Ive done DC in all sorts of trucking. Ugh. Ive taken out cars, Ive seen car fires, aggressive driving that turned into a 3 lane junkpile in front of me, pounded across the american legion bridge at 4 am in the far left lane (Before there were lane restrictions...) at 100 plus in a herd of trucks... Seen same bridge develop a 5 foot pothole where water is far below. (School does not teach you how to cross those kinds of problems) If something bad is going to happen it;s going to be goddayum DC.

No thanks. It's 15 for me. A little bit of radio, a bit of coffee and 45 miles of peace and quiet running the woods to cross the river. Always has been and always will be. Until they develop that area enough to build a 4 lane divided road out of it.

Just one tip when you come north towards manassas and see Battlefield Road Traffic Light gaurded by 4 diamonds cut into the pavement lane you are on, make sure you jake it down to 40 or less with your foot on the brakes ready for a short stop on the wide swinging left bend.

I work in Midlothian and deliver to our Chantilly branch a couple times a week. NoVA is no worse than any other populated area in rush hour. If your going all the way through you can take 301, when I go to Chantilly I take 95 then hop off in Stafford on 17 to 29 and run in that way. I still wind up on 66 for a while but usually around 30min or so and that's during rush hour. Half way up you stop at the Opal "Truck Stop" and get a nice huge BBQ sandwich which will reset your mood and your good to go!

When I drove for NEMF I dealt with the Amazon's a lot. Not bad if you can get through the gate. Chester's a whole lot better than P'burg!
