How do people get truck driving jobs with a dui, but impossible for pizza delivery?

I think the levels for DUI are ok, but the penalties should be far harsher. That goes for any kind of dangerous activity on the road. Speeding, distracted driving, agressive driving, etc. I'm really glad it won't be long till I'm done driving for a living as the longer I go the more stupidity I see out here and it's really getting under my skin. And then you hear about states like New York giving free passes to the overwhelming majority of super speeders while I get a ####ing misdemeanor for a log book violation and have to pay $400 in taxi, court fees, and fines to clear it up.

 

Contentious issue I know, but I tend to agree.

Multiple offenders - pretty obvious ban. But the 21 year old kid that made a mistake and then has it follow them for life, not sure.

5 years for CDL I agree with, but case by case should be applied.

Still - it's their equipment, so their rules.

 

Everyon gas known a person thatgets stupid drunk every single day, can't walk a straight one, but somehow is always able to get home safely. Leave him be. No DUI penalties, no drug tests, nothing. However, kill someone under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and get a roadside execution. No lawyers, no appeals, just a magistrate, a doctor, the coroner, the local news and a firing squad. Problem solved.

 

I don't get this DUI thing, if you know you are going to drink when you are some where, make sure before you get there you have a way to get back home. it's plain stupid to risk ruin your life and somebody else 's life, by getting behind the wheel drunk.

 

I want this for the dope peddlers. Only " Deer Hunter " style, where they get tossed in a swamp, under a hut, then play Russian roulette verse one another. Texting while driving also qualifies.

 

I agree Patronas. But "drunk" is very hard to define. Is it .04 for CDL holders, or .08 for everyone else, or the .10 or more that used to be the threshhold. Is 2 beers drunk? If you are 5'3" and 105lbs maybe. 6'7" and 265, probably not. You might drink 6 beers and be ok. I know I can't do that. But I honestly don't know if I can have 1, 2, or 3 before I'd tip the limit. It's too complex an issue to pin it down as tight as govt is doing. I kinda like TripleSix' idea. Leave people alone as long as the dont hurt anyone. But be extremely harsh with them if they do. The problem with that is proving alcohol caused the crash. Just because a person has a little alcohol in them doesn't prove the alcohol caused the crash. It very likely could have happened anyway. There is really no way to conclusively prove causation in that situation. That's why we have to be somewhat preventative in our approach to the problem, even though that isn't always a fair approach.

 

Ha there is hope for you. I have been fired from both Domino's and Papa John's.

In fact that is what got me into trucking, got fired after five years working at Papa John's. Was not because of a dui though, was aggravated assault on a customer. So I figured hell if I cannot deliver pizza then get me into a semi.

Cr England hired me with no hesitation. Despite them being the most hated company in the universe, I did ok there and after six months of driving for them I got me a regular dedicated route at another company averaging $1,300 a week now.

 

I sure most of us have a story telling of getting home after a drinking binge with out a wreck or ticket. However I can never support a national move to just let an impaired driver alone. First problem with it is simple. People will drive this way more. This could quadruple the chances of an accident and the property damage would cause insurance rates to get so expensive the common person could not afford it. I am sensitive to the fact a lot of people are alcoholics. There may be several in these boards. In my adult life I know scores of families that have buried children, mothers and fathers whom were victims of drunk drivers. There was a post talking about what constitutes being drunk. The limits are not based on being drunk or not. These limits are based on the thresholds of what is defined as impaired. In Georgia that limit is .08 unless you in an accident then it drops to .04. For most people these limits mean about an ounce of liquor or one beer puts you at risk of a DUI if your in an accident. To my way of thinking this allows you to drive either back to your job or home after having a social drink and not get a ticket for DUI unless of course your in an accident. Another thing that bothers me are all the people that are taking opiates for pain then drink and drive. I doubt we will all agree on this topic so you can count me as for tough penalties and this is because I rather side on the side of caution.

 

I agree with all of you who believe I tougher penalties. And not just for DUI. But, I still stand by my opinion that the penalties should not necessarily last decades or for life. People who screw up need to have a chance to live down their past. Otherwise there is no need to correct ones behavior. Why not go get that second or third DUI if your life is ruined completely over the first one? That's the same reason many people return to prison. After getting out of prison, society treats many of them so poorly that prison is looked on as a better option. If you can't live down your past, you often can't live with your future.

 

i don't know for sure why but i would guess its because it raises insurance to high to make driving a pizza worth the cost
