Exactly why no one wants to see you signing papers on a $130k-$160k truck before you even get a taste of the industry.

My first career was Air Force. My second was Banking. My third is Trucking. I now have 10 years experience and just now bought my first truck. I had ordered some trucks a few years back but had to sell them before I took delivery. Long story.

Anyway, I will take delivery of a 2017 Volvo 780 the middle of June. My plans were to lease with Land Star but that got canceled do to my last employers difference of opinion of my safety views.
I liked going faster then I was suppose to go.

I bought a new trailer also. $140,000 for the Truck, $57,000 for the trailer. $8400 for the APU. I do not have debt but still I have the opportunity cost of having that capital tide up.

I figure if I hit the powerball, I should break even.

I started driving in 1990 in the military then public sector threw 1992-96' started my second career in the oilfield for 18 years of drilling. Thought I'll just jump back in OTR when I was laid off last year. So I did , lots have changed in this industry in the past 20 years for sure. The OTR part is all good, all the regulations is the killer today. Cross your t's and dot your i's for sure. And get some idea of freight lanes for sure.

I came from 32 years of highway construction to trucking as a second career. Your going to need more than 1 year of experience before you buy your own truck let alone decide if you want to invest 10>12 years in the industry. Working and living in any otr truck is very different than working out of a pickup, van, or car then going home or to the motel after your 0700>1600. jmho
