That's kind of a long post because it's most of the blog but you can scroll down to "Dog Is My Copilot" and the content about Luke is there. I couldn't isolate it with my phone. Hope this helps!

I had one of those elevated food dishes with the 2 holders...1 for food, 1 for water...and the storage area inside that would hold a small bag of food (just in case). I'd keep an old coffee can full of food that I'd refill every day before leaving the house...would hold about 2 days worth of food. He ALWAYS had food available to him in his bowl, which was funny because he wouldn't eat at home. Weekends, same food...same bowl...he wouldn't touch it 'til Monday morning when he'd climb up into the truck again to scarf down a bowl of food. I'd refill it again at our first stop and he'd snack on it here and there throughout the day at his leisure. For water, again, ALWAYS had water available. I had a "no spill" dish that fit in the elevated carrier's spot, with a removable guard that limited spillage. In the summer, I'd keep some ice in the water and would set a couple of the blue-ice things below the water bowl to keep it cool (no AC in the truck). He was never one to play with toys while going down the road...payed better attention to where the truck was going and who was around it than most drivers (it was cool seeing him hunker down getting ready for a railroad crossing he would see coming up knowing it was a rough one).

As for treating them kindly, that should be the ONLY way to treat your dog. He's your best friend, and as long as you remember that, he'll be yours too. Don't get me wrong...you've got to correct bad behavior and assert yourself as the "top dog" and leader of the pack, and he'll respect that. If your dog tries to challenge your position in the pecking order, you've got to correct him quick and definitively so he won't try it again...but when things settle down, make sure he knows he's still your bud. Especially with a big dog, if they think there's a chance to be the dominant one, it's only a matter of time before they try to take that position from you.

I don't have much use for a dog unless it's in the 100# neighborhood. Then again, when it was time to park for the day, we weren't still cooped up in the truck. We'd either be home, or in a motel where we could stretch out and be comfortable. If you're confined to the truck for days or weeks at a time, a smaller dog might be more convenient. House-broken is DEFINITELY a plus, and know what your dog's "I gotta go" signal is...and when you see it, stop the truck and let him out or risk having a mess to clean up. They don't understand the whole "We're almost home...just 30 more miles". When they give the signal, you need to be looking for the next safe place to stop.

Dogs are great companions...especially well-behaved ones. Seeing my dog on a leash was a rare sight...he knew what was expected and acted accordingly.

Get a kitty. Especially a kitten. Two are better. If you put them on the truck when they are kittens you will have zero problems.
Nothing like a kitty to curl up with, or mellow you out when dealing with so many dumb ##### as we do. 20150627_084401.jpg I had girlfriend on truck for awhile
    ( Does that count?)
but a kitty is so much better.
20160124_133450.jpg Note cat food & treats in truck food stocks. Those are also for poor, and under privileged kitties I run across.
Knew one skateboardman that had two he walkson leash same as a dog.

You've posted before that you have locked yourself out of the truck many times. Curious why you wouldn't lock your truck while you are IN it. Are you afraid you will lock yourself inside lol

Hello Drivers and others, If this question has been answered please refer me to the appropriate thread.

What laws or regulations (if any) are there concerning pets on a CMV.? I was told , but can find no confirmation, that if you have a pet on the CMV that you must be allowed to idle your vehicle unrestricted because the laws are more inclusive when it comes to cats and dogs on the truck. That is to say, that the law cares more about your dog or cat than it does about you as a human. I have interpreted this to mean that my dog has the right to remain cool in summer and warm in winter more so than I do as the human driver of the CMV.

Does anyone have any viable information concerning this?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

In the state of California you do not own the pet, you are the pets guardian.
Other than that it's basically cruelty to animals.
I'm a cat person. I do not own the cats, far from it, I am their human.
You may be surprised that we humans don't have a cruelty to humans standard, I suppose you've never been married, you'd understand the cruelty to humans concept.
And if you drive for a mega, remember you're not just a number, so driver 478913 turn that truck off.
