Have a 2006 KW W900 MXS C-15 I recently bought with 830,000 miles on it. At 756,000(November 2012) I have paperwork on some work that Ziegler Cat did to the motor. Looks like one cylinder went out. They fixed that hole, reman head, reman camshaft, and new rocker on number 6 intake. When diagnosing a low oil pressure issue with the valve covers off, we noticed that the number 6 exhaust roller has pitted and there are some marks on the cam. I'm told the only fix is to put in a new cam and rocker. I put less than 20,000 miles a year on this truck, and it doesn't run in the winter. About halfway through our season so was hoping to make it till winter to fix it. Be less than another 10,000 miles before winter.

How long can I safely run it?
Haven't called Ziegler yet, but should there be any kind of parts warranty on this even though it was almost 4 years ago?
When I do the cam do I replace all 12 rocker assembly's?

The roller is needing to be replaced,An oil ani. will tell you how much metal is in your oil and the next one will tell if more or less is wearing off the cam>

I was told that if there are marks on the cam that it didn't pay to change the roller. Camshaft would just wear the new roller.

I would say run it, but do an oil analysis on it every time you service it. I mean, you're already gonna have to do the work, but if it's running o.k. keep running it as long as the cam or roller isn't coming apart and metal isn't getting in the oil and doing more damage to other parts.

As far as warranty, probably not much you can do. Usually they put that big word OR in there. Like xx number of years OR xxxx number of miles.

Hard to say without seeing it. I thank I would do like baha said but also polish the cam lobe at the same time. Use 400 or higher emery paper in a strip about 3 feet long or a used strip from the machine shop crank machine. Push it under the bottom of the cam, pull the ends to the top, two hand them up and down with moderate pressure four about 30 seconds. Longer with very fine paper is better. Turn the crank 1/2 turn and do it again. Do that with the crank at four different locations. Clean, lube, run, and check it in the off season.

    baha Thanks this.

also put one or two of those rare earth magnets in the area to hold any metal flakes.

If you had pitting on a wheel bearing roller or race, would you keep running it? I wouldnt, it will keep deteriorating and putting metal in the oil increasing wear.

That would have, or should have, been brought to your attention during the inframe. You can choose not to replace but they will also make a note of it in your paperwork on the build, that you signed off on just before they invoiced you, and not warranty it in the event it fails.

I'm just wondering what you mean by a mark on roller? I have seen marks on the cam rollers before that haven't got any worse after many miles. When a cam roller is trashed it will have flaking and pitting on the roller and cam lobe. And it will be very noticeable. Even to a blind man. Not saying a mark is nothing to worry about but just keep an eye on it. I have always had to pull the rack off to see a bad lobe on a cam. But then again I need glasses to see minute details also. I DONT ever emery cloth cam lobes. You can do more harm.

I meant very light and very fine. That was possibly not expressed properly. Only enough to knock any rough edges off that could start unwanted wear on new roller and old lobe.
