A crash involving an overturned big rig on Interstate 5 near McBean Parkway caused an eight-hour sig alert and sent one to the hospital Monday afternoon.
The big rig's trailer overturned after it collided with the center divider going northbound on the I-5 at approximately 2:09 p.m., a representative from the Newhall California Highway Patrol said.
According to a report from CHP, the overturned trailer came to rest over the right embankment of the freeway, blocking the right shoulder. A 2007 Chevrolet was also involved in the accident; however, the sequence of these events is still under investigation.
The trailer part of the big rig remained turned on its side and began leaking diesel fuel in the right shoulder of I-5. Both Newhall CHP personnel and Los Angeles County Fire resources responded to the crash, according to the CHP report.
According to county representative Joseph Napoli, Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Engine 150, a hazmat team, was available to help with the cleanup, but they were not needed at the scene.
Newhall CHP said the crash blocked the two right lanes on the freeway and caused 350-feet of guardrail damage. The 56-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital with minor injuries.
CHP issued a sig alert on the freeway for approximately eight hours while the wreckage and oil were cleared.
Crews could still be seen working on repairs and cleanup to the right shoulder of I-5 near McBean Parkway Tuesday morning.

I was stuck in that mess yesterday. Took almost 4 hours to get from Ontario to Castaic.
-
Yikes!
What is a sig? -
-
Interesting. Thanks!
-
I was going southbound, normally I would be going north about that time. Thanks to a training class I was running late. Still took 3 hrs to go from San Clarita to San Bernardino (88 miles).

Wow. The chassis of that Cascadia is twisted like a pretzel but the cab is still upright. They must be doing extra reinforcing at the Freightliner factory.
-
I question the frame as well. That much torque should have brought the cab over as well.
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Probably would have been less damage to the tractor if it didn't twist the frame like that.. That is impressive.
-
Twist the frame and keep the cab.
Usually it's mash the cab save the frame for the rebuild.
That looks violent from the trailer torquing the cab right over with a snap of two air bags under sleeper and two bolts at the front. Lucky is he. Usually the whole thing gets smashed down with the driver snapped out of his seat to lay in the glass to the right (Down against pavement)
