Hi all. I will begin my CDL school this week (11/13) here in Jacksonville. Just had some questions re: tankers.
I have been debating Flatbed vs Tankers for quite some time. I have a friend in Houston who is dispatch for Mackenzie tank lines. He advised Tanker is indeed good pay, but overall the hardest of the specializations. This hasn't deterred me however, as I love a challenge.
I have very limited experience in the Air Force as a fuel-y- running jet fuel to various aircraft in the late 90's for a couple of years. We mainly used hydrant trucks, but did use straight truck type tankers on occasion.
I have talked to a recruiter already at CTL here out of Jax/ Savannah. I have also contacted superior, and got the number for the terminal manager in tampa. I will contact him soon as I progress through school.
Was curious if tanker would be the best option considering my area here in Jax? I hope Chinatown or ethos could offer some insight? - I'm either going to focus on that , or consider Flatbed-- (melton/ Paul hire from my area).
Thanks!

Yes, go tankers. It's not difficult at all, in fact, flatbed is more complicated. McKenzie is good and hires new cdl grads.
Superior-Carriers
Trimac Transportation
SVTN
Tidewater Transit
Schneider Bulk
CTL Transportation
All the above hire new cdl grads. Tanker work is easy money and can start your career in the $60K range right out of school.Just passing by, Switcher, RubyEagle and 2 others Thank this. -
If you do tankers, you will have to get use to the surge of the liquid behind you. But overall tankers are not bad, been pulling them since 2002.
MarkH129 and FredZeppelin77 Thank this. -
Thanks for the responses guys.

I started green with Trimac, total of 6 days training outside of orientation week and was cut loose on my own.
It's not bad at all, respect that your product moves and you will do fine.Friend Thanks this. -
Very good choice! Tanker companies utilize their equipment much more efficiently. Backhauls, although not non existent, are rare. You unload the product and return home or back for another load. There's no downtime. The customers are better people. Tanker companies pay better and many still offer paid holidays. The opportunities for dedicated work are plenty.
No comparison, tankers are better. -
I just looked Trimac in my area and they say they pay up to $850/ week for 55-60 hours/ week.
Is this normal tanker pay? -
Times are tough, seems low to me even for a newbee.....
