It works because they prey on idiots. I know it cost $1.28 per mile to run my truck. ( payments, maint, fuel, driver pay, insurance) So with them I would be going in the hole and my drivers would be pissed because they would only be making about half of what they do now. On average my drivers makes .54 per mile. 25% of gross. So if I were driving the truck at $1.05 per mile I would make .25 -.27 per mile. Might as well drive for someone else at that rate.
If you had a truck that was paid for and had very low maint cost you could keep food on the table and the lights on for a while but it would eventually catch up to you and your equipment would be worn out and in need of rebuilds or replacing. So if that's all you could get you would still be better off to park your truck, drop the insurance and drive for someone who could find some decent freight.

IF you want something that will work, will grow and be there for a sustainable business to leave to the brats, then learn how to run a business first and then get a CDL and get on the road. It is like those asking what does it take to be an owner operator because I think trucks are neat and cool and I have $20k to spend on investing into being a real trucking company.

What's funny is you are doing exactly what a lot of us absolutely hate as owners, being a broker and putting your own trucks on the road. This is one problem many of us have with competition and lowering of the rates.

And thinking about it, a few companies will not allow you to lease to them being a broker, you have to have a separate company for the trucks.

How can you be a broker and sorry for the insult,.. but be so ignorant about trucking?

Or are you just a phone and keyboard puncher working for a broker?

If you do not understand leasing and rates, how can you possibly understand lanes and costs associated with owning a truck?

    I'm not a trucker. I'm a transport engineer.

    EDIT:

Reading off a load description and keeping the set price to within what ever percentage they dictate does not make someone a broker.
