A self-driving truck just hauled 51,744 cans of Budweiser on a Colorado highway

  1. Cops kept 4wheelers away from truck. So it didn't have to slam on brakes or make sudden lane change.

The system is just that a system,. To many variables to leave to just some sensors.

Next they will make a concrete corridor parallel to i-40 to run east to west coast. No need to stop for food. They can pull into a service plaza fuel up. And go.

If you're the co-pilot in an autonomous truck, will you still be subjected to the HOS...and would you be paid CPM? I could rake in the dough while not driving...!

One of the concepts and long term goals behind these automated trucks is that they can be electronically linked, similar to a train. You can have, for example, 10 trucks in a tight, drafting convoy. When the lead truck's brakes are activated either automatically or manually, it also activates the brakes in all trucks in the train. Same with accelerating. This could potentially save companies huge sums of money on fuel.

That could have some interesting ramifications. As an example, say there is a crash that closes the interstate. Traffic is re-routed on difficult, heavily traveled surface streets, through a busy down town area.

Those are just the sort of issues that will always keep a driver in the seat, regardless of how automated the trucks become
