I'm not sure. I picked up the carrier already assembled and installed it. So maybe a bad bearing or bad assembly?
rank Thanks this. -
New or used? Sounds like you sourced the assembly and they installed it? If that's the case, I'm surprised they covered any labor at all. I suppose it's possible that they messed up something when they installed it that took the bearing out but you're in muddy waters there for sure.

No, they rebuilt the assembly and I installed it.

Yeah older trucks need some work but they're still worth it for me. I bought mine for 16k. Spent about 7k on new shocks, new brakes, new steering gearbox, fully rebuilt drivelines, and some new steers before going on the road. The thing drives like a champ. Recently bought a new detroit radiator for $600 and about to drop 2k to get the front drive rebuilt. But all that was planned maintenance, not road breakdowns. I'll give the emissions trucks a few more years before I buy one.

Well that didn't take long. I got 260 miles in to my first run with the new truck and I start hearing a knocking noise around xenia OH. The knocking went away after 30 seconds. Thought that cant be good, then the smoke started rolling from under the hood. I stopped to see what was going on and found the dipstick sticking about 3 inches out of the tube and just pouring smoke and oil out. I went to the passenger side and seen the breather tube just pouring out smoke also. I got back in and seen I was 12 miles from the jeffersonville,OH TA stop. I hurried up and got there, by that time it developed a miss. I got it parked and shut down and after the smoke cleared and several drivers came over and asked me if I was on fire I popped the hood. The coolant was down to the add mark and the oil was just under the full mark. I thought maybe the head gasket blew and was venting combustion pressure to the crankcase. It was 6:30 pm so I thought I would wait till morning and call the dealer. Luckily that bunk heater worked so I could sleep. In the morning I seen the coolant tank was empty and oil dipstick was way over full so I surmised the coolant went into the oil. I didn't think it was wise to try and start the engine until I called the dealer. I kept thinking the worst but when I called the dealer he went way beyond what I would have expected. He said of course the engine was under warranty and I will take care of that. What he did next made me very happy. I didn't even get around too asking for it when he offered to send his tow truck with my old fld to me(he is in South bend,IN) and let me use it to finish the delivery and keep till the 2011 is fixed. I don't need to say how dissapointed I am with a brand new detroit long block blowing after 260 miles, but I couldn't be happier with the dealer. I want to give a shout for the dealer, but don't know if that is against the forum rules. I will update when I find out anything. The dealer thought it could be an injector cup or could be the head gasket. So either way it might be a few weeks to get it fixed. At least I can use my old rig until then. Sorry for the long post. Rob.

Old iron = 1
Emissions motors = 0
My eyebrows are raised when we have to throw a whole new block in a truck with only 600k miles. My buddies Detroit 12.7 just hit 2.5 million miles on the same block and first and only inframe was done at 1.4 million.spyder7723, Oxbow, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 3 others Thank this. -
Well not everybody has good luck with old trucks. I know I did not.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Well sorry to hear about that @Bad Monkey. I have to say tho.....every truck I've ever bought takes money to get it in shape. After a point tho, I know most every part is new and I would dread the thought of buying an unknown truck again. I just have the feeling you spent money getting that FLD/N14 in shape for the next fella and now you're starting all over again. BOL to you tho.
