I would never in a million years give my social security number to a customer. All the ones that asked for my DL got fake numbers. I've dealt with the same two customers for three years now and don't have to give them any info.
I did notice the last few years of pulling reefer/van junk freight that more and more customers began accepting company issues ID as a valid ID when required. -
You would be surprised at how few companies have a privacy or data security policy.
Often use that simple fact as a valid reason to deny anything being copied. -
Frankly I don't have a problem. My CDL life from the FMSCA through the Department of Justice onwards to the Military (You have NO privacy there. NONE) is so easily discoverable by anyone online it's really something.
Whatever they do? Well... I have a variety of identify theft type resources that are active against spammers, scammers and callers trying to chisel into my money or credit. I live very simply these days to the point of being able to identify sources of problems like spam mailing and get it cut off.
The biggest thing you can do is not participate in sweepstakes in front of stores. They gather your information and so on and then you all get buried in mails, calls and so on. That is a real problem. Not giving out your information in anything in your life not strictly related to trucking is a way of controlling who gets a hold of it.
We did have social media for a few years as a experiement. What I learned is that it is a liability in so many way's it is not funny. We finally closed it all off and stick strictly to forum type internet posts.
In my day trying to get into a Military Depot the gaurds ask you questions that will make you blush if there is something in your history to keep quiet. Since we had clean records dating back to the occasional fist fight in school... that is not a problem.Snailexpress Thanks this. -
If you are paying someone's bogus debt because some guy on the phone or a letter said "pay up" I think you need help.
Put a credit freeze on your name with the credit bureas. Never pay a bill you don't owe. LifeLock is a poor & expensive substitute for a free or $10 credit freeze. Not even YOU can open up more credit it you have credit freeze in place. Get one. -
I never had an issue. Other people did though

I once booked a load of electronics going to the east coast from Socal. trailer got loaded and when signing the paperwork they wanted a fingerprint!! I refused saying they already copied my CDL. the manager said I'll have to call your dispatcher or unload the trailer(like I'll get you in trouble). told him I am the dispatcher, NOW remove the freight from MY trailer. he said it could be hours. I told him the truck is leaving in 30 minutes no matter what, they unloaded it and I left. called the broker and told him he should have disclosed this detail upfront, he understood. I'm going to make my own company ID with wrong DL #

Saw a TV show about companies with security issues. If they use a copy machine to take copies of drivers license whatch out. They can remove the hard drives in those copiers and it collects data of everything that was copied. All it would take is a service call and the Tech would recommend a new hard drive all that info just left the building
