I turned in a DVIR daily for five-and-a-half years. I just started with a new company and they tell me I don't have to do that unless there is a problem with the truck. Does anyone know if this is true?

True.
§396.11 Driver vehicle inspection report(s).
(2) Report content. (i) The report must identify the vehicle and list any defect or deficiency discovered by or reported to the driver which would affect the safety of operation of the vehicle or result in its mechanical breakdown. If a driver operates more than one vehicle during the day, a report must be prepared for each vehicle operated. The driver of a passenger-carrying CMV subject to this regulation must prepare and submit a report even if no defect or deficiency is discovered by or reported to the driver; the drivers of all other commercial motor vehicles are not required to prepare or submit a report if no defect or deficiency is discovered by or reported to the driver.

I turn those in weekly as well. So we have to log a pretrip/post trip? Just don't have to prepare a dvir and submit them?

Company I work for has elogs and its simple yes/no report on qualcomm.
if there is no defects im still required to fill one out saying -nothat defects fouñd. -
The company, however, can choose to go above and beyond that and require one evey day. We do.
CrappieJunkie, tscottme, Ryan423 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Turn one in.
Don't just fill the thing out, get out of that cab and do a proper pretrip, around and under everything. Fingerprint it all. One day sooner or later, something will be off and you will find it, fix it before you really cause a expensive problem breaking down out there.DoneYourWay and jethro712 Thank this. -
i just started a new company that said we didnt need it either. been filling one out for 2yrs. still fill one out due to being able to request who inspected it last. if i got a d/h & jockey damages trlr, i have no proof other than logged time on eld.

Company can require above and beyond what regulations call for. You are the driver and will become responsible for that truck.
If you drive off in the truck and have an accident where someone gets hurt. If a defect is discovered with the truck or trailer,.. you are responsible, not the company as you took the equipment out.
I own my equipment and I am anal about checking over my truck before I leave,.. whether I am at a rest area, truck stop, back alley, private property. Anything can happen between pre-trips. Never assume the truck is fine. I'd be retired now if I had a dollar for every truck I have seen on the road where it was obvious the driver never did a proper pre-trip. You know who you are.

It sounds like you are running on paper logs. To answer your question about logging pre and post trips you are only required to log a 15 minute pretrip. The post trip is not required to be logged with the acception of writing it in the remarks when you put what city and state you stopped in to take your 10. This is done this way because dot acknowledges that a post trip generally won't take more then a few minutes and is just a walk around the truck and trailer.
