Many customers I have picked up and delivered to required it for safety reasons and no faster then 5 mph.I use. to deliver to this plant hat would ban drivers from there property if they didn't have there 4 ways on and seatbelt.I do think its a good habit to get into especially if you're delivering at night.

4ways on never bothered me but I have been noticing tons of drivers in actual backing situations NOT using their 4ways lately. It's almost like, did I miss a day of school where they said we no longer need 4ways while backing?

I rarely use 4 ways unless I'm stopped on the road. The one that winds me up are 4 wheelers that put them on and drive down the highway (at the speed limit of course) because they were to lazy to strap down that box they're hauling or because the road's a bit icy. I never understood the reason for 4 ways. If you can't see an 8'6 x 13'6 x 75ish object, I can't comprehend how adding a couple little flashing lights is going to change things. Shouldn't be on the road if you're that blind.

I'll use them climbing a hill, and there are actually signs requiring it in VA.

There are times and places where 4-ways are indicated: slow travel up a hill, a requirement from customers in their yards, sure, fire 'em up. The part that's a problem, I believe, is using them at inappropriate times. In fog, or in traffic, or at a fuel island, so on. I think that signalling an danger or even an emergency with the 4-way flashers makes more of a safety hazard then any potential risk reduction. Man, in heavy rain or fog you just can't be careful enough. The conditions are bad, but bad drivers make it even more bad.

I believe many "experts" are recommending this kind of inappropriate usage, is that right?

Company requires it on their property, customers lots, and loading facilities. Most loading facilities require it as well.

Last few companies have required it that I worked at.

I also run them with pulling a hill at slower speeds.

I've been to a couple places that require them at all times while on their property, defeats the purpose.
