Red light issues...

DASH CAM, DASH CAM, DASH CAM. If you have video showing that it was not red until you had no room to stop, that's your best defense.

The only way s dash cam will save you is if it shows that the light was not yet red upon entering the intersection.
If it turned red before you entered the intersection, then it falls back to the driver for maintaining control or driving too fast for conditions.

 

Does every traffic light stay green the same amount of time? How about yellow? Red? I didn't think so. That's my point. Yes, you should treat any green as stale, but there really is no way to know if or when it may turn yellow. That's my point.

 

Always assume a green light you are approaching is going to change before you pass it. So, slow down when coming on up to a green light unless it just turned green.

 

In the above video the speed limit is 60. Leading up to the signal light is tons of skid marks. This light and the others in the area are red light traps. If you look at the video again you will see there is absolutely no cross traffic waiting at the red light in opposing directions. I saw the light turn yellow for no reason and quickly surmised I would be deadstopped about halfway through the intersection sitting duck as my trailer was empty it takes longer to stop as proven by the commercial drivers handbook. I chose to cruise on through as there was no danger so I took the shot. Cost me $75 bucks for doing the right thing.

 

What if there was a cute little puppy right there in the middle of road?

I hauled die sets for metal pressing, some were huge, weighed a lot - so if I can stop in a panic stop with 65k on the deck, you can stop too.

 

70 feet is past the point of no return. No reasonable person could expect one of these trucks to stop in less than 100 feet. That being said, without video, you're at the mercy of the court.

In that case, you're probably better off to steer if you can do it without tipping over.
