Found a daycab I can afford from a local Mack dealer.
CPG (container port group) runs containers out of a rail yard in my city. The recruiters tell me that the trips are between 100-600 miles out, over the mountains (NC- VA mountains).
With time spent picking up and delivering, im guessing I'd need to spend some nights out.
Im not too needy. If I can park near a hotel, I'll stay at one but if I run out of hours on the road, and I'm willing to bed it in the cab, is it allowed/ do folks do it?
Is it feasible to run a daycab in this situation?I

No, you can not log sleeper birth in a daycab truck.
TallJoe, buddyd157 and Driver0000 Thank this. -
They didn't say anything about logging sleeper berth. You can log off duty and sleep anywhere you want tofargonaz, QuietStorm, bulldawg trucker and 4 others Thank this.

Folks used to do it all the time. With the change in definition to on-duty a few years ago, yes you can legally log off-duty while resting at the controls of a parked motor vehicle. So technically, yes you could take your 10 hour break in a day cab if you were caught without access to a motel. For the cost of a motel you would break even many nights on the fuel to idle for heat/air.
TallJoe, HaulinCars, Bean Jr. and 1 other person Thank this. -
So with trip planning, hotels would be ok, I'm guessing.
The reasons I want a daycab are
1) the day cabs are cheaper than sleepers here
2) the day cab I want to buy was run easy by a medium sized local carrier. All service was done local and I talked with a driver who vouched that the truck I'm buying was driven by an old pro who took care of it.
3) the containers are going to be heavy. Daycab is lighter.
Is it common to work this way?
If I have to pay $200/ week for hotels, I'm fine with that. -
I see many drayage haulers with day cabs, also the LTL guys do it all the time. If you are running planned routes in the same service area you will learn where to park, etc. I ran day cab car hauler for many years and used motels, usually the same three or four motels each week. Worked well for me, and a plus no line for the shower!
Driver0000 Thanks this. -
Well that settles it.
I have a few more steps over the next month to go through and then I'm going to sign on with CPG and start my life as an owner/ operator.
I'm not looking to make a killing or anything. I'm just looking for the independence.
Anything I gross over $900/ week goes straight into business account for maintenance, taxes, etc.
Hopefully, after a year or so I'll be stable enough to run my own authority. -
Business gets paid before you get paid.rollin coal, Dye Guardian, Roberts450 and 2 others Thank this. -
Worse case scenario is the tractor needs a $15,000 repair right out the door. In that case, I'd either eat it and continue or fold.Ruthless Thanks this.

If you log off duty in daycab they can ask for proof of where you slept; motel receipt, etc...buddyd157 Thanks this.
