So these small fleets (10-12 trucks) have been around for decades, are buying new W900's and 389's every 3-4 yrs, buying new reefer trailers as they get 5-6yrs old, paying drivers 65-70k a year salary (yes, salary) and have a pretty good balance of home time as well.
You think they're hauling cheap freight, and I'm being delusional?

I'm speaking from the independent side, Einstein... Lol. Why are you speaking on fleets for? You're comparing apples to oranges. Those with small fleets that don't rely on b.s. brokers and have done their own stuff for years, have it made.

These "fleets" I'm talking about started off with a truck hired on to a carrier, they still haul under that carrier only. Like they say 80% of $2.50/mile is still better than 100% of $1.50/mile.
Off topic I know lol -
After you spend some time running the frozen seafood game, regardless of your area, you learn a lot... all those big boys with the stretched out trucks and 53 ft spreads, many times loaded to the doors, floor to ceiling. So those guys can easily afford their truck and pay a driver 1500 a week to run another truck.
I'll never forget hearing my friends 600 cat grunt up the hills on 80 in PA.
As with everything, all depends on what you want to do for that $$$$
