Even if you take the numbers off, there's nothing to keep him from putting the same numbers right back on there. Are you saying if he removed those numbers somebody couldn't have just put them right back on there? License plates are different, you can't duplicate them like you can do numbers. That being said, people do steal plates also. If the guy wants to run your numbers, by leaving them on there, all you a doing is saving him the cost of mailbox letters.

It's not like the numbers are a big secret that need protecting. They are plastered on the side of the truck for all the world to see. That is very different that a SS number.

If you have your own authority, give me your company name and I can have your numbers in about 30 seconds.

But by removing them himself, he's shown due diligence. This is like someone breaking into a house where the door is left open. By removing the numbers, the thieves have to pick the lock to said door. It should make a difference in any court case, both criminal and civil.

Granted but some of these post act like it's all on the previous owner for leaving the numbers on. Like if somebody leaves the numbers on it's fair game and no fault of the guy that's running them.

Are you saying the court will so leniency to a robber if the door is left unlocked? That may be but it shouldn't be.

The OP can get a lawyer if he wants but personally I'd wait and see what the authorities do.

if the previous owner did "due diligence" as another member said, the former owner would have (hopefully) used some sort of product to fully remove any and all remnants of the numbers, even to the point of a little rubbing compound and a buffer to restore the paint under them.

in the end, the former owner did nothing to secure his operating numbers and got screwed.

yes, plates can be and are stolen every day. it's the damages that can occur from the time they are stolen, to the time it is reported. say the owner parked his vehicle where ever, and went home, say sick, and was at his house sick for say 2 weeks, and never went to check on hos vehicle. well that's at least 2 weeks of destruction or other crimes that can take place in that time frame.

the for one to wait to contact a lawyer, one would be a fool in doing so. starting a paper trail right away is one way to cover one's butt.

yes, leaving the numbers on makes them fair game, due to the lack of thinking on the former owners part.

i really cannot see why you have such a problem in understanding the ramifications of this, as the o/p has actually come to see, himself!!!!

Officers don't go by what is on the door, they go by what is on the cab card. If anything they would double check the cab card matches the numbers on truck. Dollars to donuts this guy photoshopped his cab card to match the truck numbers and figured to run super illegal making max dollars and the first time he gets popped OOS and a major ticket, THEN change everything over to his own clean numbers and keep rolling.

Really? So I can go to the truck stop, find me a set of numbers, and run with them without ramifications?

Here's what will more than likely happen. Authorities will shut him down and note that he was using stollen numbers. A few phone calls and emails and the OP should be able to fix this. Of course, you can hire a lawyer to do all this for you, but it won't be cheap.
