I just got terminated today on the basis of "Backing Incident". I have been a CDL A driver for over 11 years.
I was pulling out of the lot to go to the dock to load my trailer. There was pickup truck in my way as I was backing into the dock so I attempted to go around it but got stuck.
The passenger side drive wheels were hanging off of the shoulder of the road. That was it. There was no damage to anything or to the truck. Just stuck.
Is this a legit scenario for "backing incident"? I have never had any incidents or violations in my history of driving. This is a first for me.
Help. Terminated for "Backing Incident" but No Damages or Collision

If I was to get fired for every little incident like that .... I'd be fired a lot
okiedokie, Brandonpdx, Justrucking2 and 7 others Thank this. -
How did your company find out about this "incident"? Seems to be more to the story than you are telling. What state did this occur in? What state is your company located in? If an "art will" state, they need no reason to let you go. Maybe it was the color of your shirt they didn't like ????
CrappieJunkie and buddyd157 Thank this. -
Is that all?
I would have been fired and fired and fired so many more times than I have already. Ive destroyed cars that intruded into MY docking area while iM trying to get into that space...
Your company must have been really... stiff. Let's put it that way to fire people for that little bitty bit of a boo boo.
11 years eh? I'll take you on if I was a company it will have to be something seriously expensive before i fire you. I don't mind you getting stuck now and then trying to work around something.
I once hopped off pavement into a field to turn around in a Sysco. Unfortunately that field was 5 inches of mud after a rain. I clawed out of a fast jackknife and threw down 8 pallets from the nose of my trailer in front of my drives to get it out back onto pavement. As far as I know those pallets are still rotting, sunken into that field to this day. I was docked for 8 dollars a pallet from pay too that week. If only the bossman knew the story....
I think you should enjoy some days at home, and get back out there onto the big road when you get ready to do it. Im not even worried about this... that company that fired you must have been something... poor things.Crude Truckin' Thanks this. -
How is that a backing incident? It reads more like you got stuck? They fire you for getting stuck? Or is there something we are missing?
CrappieJunkie and x1Heavy Thank this. -
Truth. I don't know how many times I've been stuck, but it has been more than a handful. Been a couple I just reached down in my pocket and paid for it because I knew it was my fault and to save the headache of reporting it.Last edited: Oct 5, 2017
snowlauncher and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Whenever the transmission is in reverse and anything happens, technically that is a backing incident. Should have said you got stuck going forward.
snowlauncher and Canned Spam Thank this. -
So if this cat just moved the gear leaver to one of the forward gears he would be OK and have his job back?
So Scotty, when did you give up driving and start working in the front office? It wasn't after a right turn was it?okiedokie, Roger McG, Blackshack46 and 3 others Thank this. -
My company can fire us for any reason they want. Attitude. Safety concerns. Especially during our first 90 days we were told we were on "probation ".

He also mentioned a pickup truck was in the way. When you're telling this stuff to the safety guy back at the office try to keep the details short and sweet.
driver--"truck is stuck, send a tow unit"
safety guy-- Why is it stuck?
driver-- "please hurry my department of transportation hours of service limits are ticking down."
safety guy-- I need more details about why you are stuck so I can fire you..
driver-- "please hurry my department of transportation hours of service limits are ticking down."Toomanybikes, Knucklehead, tlalokay and 3 others Thank this.
