I am on the verge of buying another truck and trailer. I am just terrified of hiring someone. I am afraid that no one else is going to care for my equipment or take care of the customer like me.
Any advice?
Afraid to hire someone

Just know that an employee will never be as effecent or effective as you are! I would guess you would only get %80 out of them that you could do yourself over the long haul. When you pencil it out subtract that %20 and another %10 for yourself. If the numbers still work give it a whirl. Rates have been good this year but last year sucked. Can you still make it work with last years revenue? If your really good at finding, retaining and managing someone else you might get a good run but.......
Be prepared to get rid of them quick and have a replacement ready at any moment.
I spent the last 25 years managing people. I'm done with it! That's why I just drive my own truck now. Never been happier.Dave_in_AZ, Lepton1, 77fib77 and 4 others Thank this. -
I’m plotting the same - but only because a driver came into sight that I really trust. The only driver besides my wife that I’ve ever teamed with and can fully trust.
Before this, I’d simply watched my mate with 5 trucks struggle to retain good help - then have to attend a rollover of one of his trucks on I44.
And I thought I’d never consider it.Lepton1, Dan.S and nightgunner Thank this. -
Hire the best you can source. Where I work drivers require 7 years truck driving experience accident free with 3 years pulling trains. It weeds out the idiots. Have them complete a intelligence quotient test would not be a bad idea just to see what end of the gene pool they reside
Good luckLepton1, 77fib77, whoopNride and 3 others Thank this. -
That's a risk you'll have to take. But chances are greater that'll happen with a tarnished record.nightgunner Thanks this.

Then don't do it. But if you do, try to find a vet who has been out for 2-3 years. Is married and has younger children at home.
If mama's happy he wont be alliwes to quit so. Find out what his anniversary is, when his kids birthdays are. A stupid $50 restaurant gift card. And a $25 video store gift card for the kids. Combined with a quarterly bonus based on productivity. Will give you a hard working employee. Who will stick around. -
Hiring people will ruin your faith in humanity.
That said.......
1, customers are more prevalent than drivers.
2, dime a dozen drivers aren't worth a dime a piece.
3, defend your drivers against high volume customers that burn them.
Good luck, you'll need plenty of it. It's taken me 5 years to get the drivers I have now. I treat them like gold.Tropsnart, Ruthless, Jazz1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Don't get discouraged with the bad ones, you will learn what to look for in a driver and find a good one. My driver now grates on me at times but you have to be able to overlook their short comings. You are not there to be their best friend either.
We get along but will never be drinking buddies. Even though my current driver grates on me he gets the job done on time with no damages.
I got lucky on this one. -
I don't own anymore. But when I did I had a guy quit without telling me. I found out on a Monday morning when my customer called wanting to know where his cars were. I finally got in touch with the drivers wife and she told me he went to work for someone else. Well ok...where is my equipment?
Her: at the truck stop.
Me: really?! Where are the keys?
Her: in the ignition..
Wow!!! Never again! Seems they will cost you more then they'll make you!!Lepton1 Thanks this.
