remember that thing they told you about layover pay? for sitting? some pay $300 a day.
why because they dont pay it... and not because they keep you rolling either...
they didnt hire you to pull 1500 mile loads.
i mean sure they have some even in the slower times.
slow times: btw? why did they hire you if they dont have enough freight?
because... they need you for the busy times...
so they have 10 drivers for peak times...
and 10 when its slow... they dont want you to quit... really they dont. but they cant pay you to not work either. and they only need 5 drivers...
what to do???
well you split those 5 loads into 1/2’s or 1/3’s so all drivers at least get to pull a trailer part way... relay loads.
you won’t make the $240 a day you thought you would. and you wont make that $100-$300 layover pay either.
you will make $100-$180 a day. and get a crappy check...
and they will have you for the times they really need you and can keep you busy.
they might even explain it to you so it swallows easier... we arent running you from chicago to atlanta... then back from atlanta to chicago... you will go have way and meet a guy and swap loads... so you can be at home (note round trip at .40 cpm you’d bank $560. of course half way $280 but dont forget you will sit all day long waiting for the relay load. not a full day or they would owe you layover. no, but basically sit all day and dont forget... once you are home with your 1/3 of a payday there is no layover. but they will need you back early that 3rd day because dispatch found you a good one down to texas or pa. ).
trust me its how it works at some companies... especially training companies... and you dont know to ask about this stuff in orientation because you assume the company is basically honest.
bad assumption driver... they have 10,000 or 50,000 trucks... not because they are the best or nicest but because they haul cheap freight and subsidize expenses on your back.
think about it a bit...
how the big companies rip you off

What's your point? Obviously every one of us who visits this site expects to marry one of Queen Lizzie's nieces, own a 200 metre long yacht AND drive a car who's name we can't pronounce.
In other words, don't like it? Do sumpin else.Lepton1, nightgunner, stwik and 5 others Thank this. -
doin sumpin else is good advice if the sumpin else isnt moving from one company to another without realizing how they are screwing you so you can actually avoid the next screwing.Toomanybikes, Zaros and Steel Dragon Thank this.

Well it's the way it is. There isn't much choice unless you want to be on the side of limiting drivers through proper licensing and strict enforcement.
We have too many drivers and more than enough trucks, these companies are managing their resources the best they can because they can't pull work out of their butts.Lepton1 and Steel Dragon Thank this. -
You must pull a box. Tankers dont do that. Flats dont. Car haulers dont. Bed buggers dont. If youve run from bottom feeder to bottom feeder and dont like bottom feeding, you can't really blame the bottom feeder, can you? After all, you're the one that chose to STAY on the bottom.

There are good companies out there..your job driver is to find them..most mega's won't cut it.
$200 a day driving is alot better than standing all day flipping burgers for $60. -

You haven't been around long enough, there are good companies out here that will keep you busy and the wallet full. You just need to look, have a good attitude and talk to folks. A little luck helps too.

If drivers don't like relays, or sitting, then maybe they should find a good company to drive for...and, there are some out there.
I drive a van, and I never sit...unless getting unloaded. If I sit too long, then I do get detention pay. I don't have to do relays just to get a crappy check. I also always know where I'm going, and where I will be delivering to, and picking up at.im6under, Crusader66, Steel Dragon and 2 others Thank this. -
