That’s going to all be based on you, what you haul and your experience. 2- 28x20 with a 10’ flap and 24x16 with a 8 foot flap would be the minimum. Get d rings all the way around and you can turn those to be 6’ drops and a 4’ drop when you don’t need big tarps. I’ve used this setup for years with some dedicated 4’ tarps as well. Next set will be 11’ drops and 5’ drops if I keep this trailer. Tri city canvas or tarpstop can fix you up

I would recommend Duroche Tarps in Dayton Ohio. Extremely well made and long lasting. Prices are comparable to Tarp Stop, but much better quality.

There is a new kind of tarp that is strong and light weight. I haven't tried them but would like someone here that has tell us about them.
They are called parachute tarps and there made out of parachute materials. Cost I think is around $700 for 6 foot.

And to answer your question I hardly ever find freight that needs 8 foot tarps. 6 is good enough for everything

Ripstop nylon? Not great for abrasion and definitely not waterproof.

Things might have progressed, but, a buddy had "parachute tarps". Yes they were light, almost too light, the slightest breeze and you were in trouble. Plus, only repairable in a tarp shop on a sewing machine. Your mileage may vary.
