The company I am looking at operates in all 48 contigious states and Canada, so for Canada do you need a passport to cross the border? What if you don't get one, they just don't send you there or how does it usually work?
Is a passport needed

You don't require passport when driving into Canada. You do require proof of citizenship. Flying you need a passport. Best get a Fastcard if you can to avoid delays at customs.

Here is DMV basics on current Real ID Licensing being implemented.
U.S. Passport Card & Enhanced Driver License | DMV.ORG
A rather decent TTR thread on Passport etc. A little bit of this and that.
FAST Card or Passport
Our last trips out of Canada around the 9-11 time faced increased security and in those days all we needed (Married team) was to show CDL and declare United States. At that time we came out empty usually and always entered winsdor loaded with advance customs paperwork already done by higher in company cross border so we get it rubber stamped at customs there.
I will have to renew next year, I am already getting ready to get a updated full passport in addition to a enhanced license as well as a enhanced carry (Not part of this topic at all. But shows the magnitude of changes coming by 2020. After 2020 on ordinary CDL or Car licenses without that gold star you cannot board domestic flights nor enter federal installation or buildings.
Going into Canada has also apparently changed with HOS and so forth. Im not current on that so don't look to me for that kind of information. We have been out of the industry too many years. -
Well if you get one . Get both...
Never know.
I actually applied for both the Day after I got my Citizenship.Farmerbob1 Thanks this. -
You can drive into Canada with just a passport card. But if you’re going through the process to get one I’d just get the book, that way you have it if you ever want to travel anywhere else.
As far as the company, do they require all their drivers to be Canada legal? If they don’t then you’ll be fine without getting anything and simply just don’t run Canada.Jazz1 Thanks this. -
i use to drive to on can a few years ago without anything but a state dl. can border patrol will check you and truck, takes about a hour. if cleared then off u go

State DL or birth certificate NO LONGER acceptable for crossing land border to Canada.
You need a passport book or card, or one of the "trusted traveler" cards. All the info you need is on the CBP website.
Some carriers don't require all their drivers to be admissible to Canada. Some carriers do.
Which one is yours? -
you dont need nothing to get into canada. cross the bridge and the canada border patrol will give you a pink slip. then drive over to dock back up and go inside. they will search truck only and run your info. takes about a hour. the us charges you $50 to get back in the states.
