If you ever saw the inside of a trans the word 'float' makes absolutely no sense.
Maybe 'sliding gears' would be a more descriptive term if you don't like to say "no clutch".

I'm well aware it's not a literal term.

Oh I forgot to add...
"Stevens" ------ enough said! They had the same rep back in the day they have now. -
They were a pretty decent place to work back then. Not the best pay but the work was there.

LMAO. Really?
Using the clutch stops them from sliding? Great insight. Thanks for trolling.Hammer166 Thanks this. -
Anyone who could really shift smoothly would understand that "float" very accurately describes how the shifter feels during a perfect shift.
But hey, what do I know? I just drive a desk! -
I just assumed that was understood knowledge, that was how I learned to do it. If you're coming down an offramp towards a stop sign or signal with the engine brake on, or getting ready to make a rolling turn, it's pretty much required.
-
I also have to stop myself from letting off the accelerator when it's about to shift lol.

My trainer showed me how to float gears, took a good week and a half to do all gears without scratching one. I been floating every since.

Always used a clutch until one day I trained with a city driver who insisted I never use the clutch unless I was at a stop or starting from a stop. Otherwise float those gears. If done right, I see no harm in doing it. But be aware that the clutch is more then a connection between the engine output and trans. It absorbs a lot of shock engaging the two. However you shift you need to make sure you do not create a condition where you torque shock the system especially loaded. Lot of drivers break clutches, output shafts and driveshafts by not applying torque smoothly.
