Auto vs. Manual Transmission......

And I am once again left to ask myself WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY? LMMFAO

 

My friend just sold his new Honda Accord with the electronic steering for its reliability issues. Traded it on a brand new Charger, said he didn’t trust that steering in the Honda anymore.

 

I took an 18 speed auto for a trip up the road and back. I'm not super fond of them. Thing was very shift happy.

Technologically though its quite impressive that they can design a computer system that can accomplish that much. I mean think about it, the engine RPM needs to be precisely monitored and controlled, the shift actuator needs to move the shift rails to the correct position at EXACTLY the proper millisecond (based on several inputs and calculations such as engine load, throttle position, road speed, engine speed). Its mind blowing how far we've come in 25 years (even if they aren't 100% bulletproof yet).

I think it's more of the vehicle controlling you as the driver then you controlling the vehicle. I've been driving manual transmission for 5 years and now I've been driving an automatic transmission. I can't seem to adopt to it my hand still reaches for the stick and so do my foot reaches for the cluch.. It's ok, but this new stuff like it breaks hard on you when someone cuts you off or then it would do the same passing an overpass brige.. for the most part if you ain't paying attention and you have less then 6 seconds to slow down, the turqe will keep pushing you in till the computer saids it's time to drop a gear then the next then the next.. Manual I can just stop in whatever gear and skip a few to pick right up the speed. The crazy part is if your on ice then get cut off or have to stop without sliding is my biggest for automatic trucks..

I'm reading this thread because I drive a belly dump trailer and a 96 FLD 120 ten speed. I'm looking for a new tractor and am seriously considering auto shift because at the end of the day my knees ache. Actually, my right knee aches more than my clutch knee. But doing dirt work and asphalt all day requires constant stopping and starting. I did a job today, 6 loads and each load went through 8 stops signs and traffic lights each way. So I had to come to a complete stop and then start 96 times. And of course, half of those stops were at the bottom of hills and my old freightliner struggles up every one of them and I'm manipulating the accelerator to try to keep it in the sweet spot. I have no trouble shifting but one of my philosophies about work is "work smarter, not harder". I think by going to autoshift, I can eliminate some work for the same pay. I'm an O/O with this one truck. I live in Texas, so inclimate weather conditions aren't a factor. I'm ready to just press the pedal and go.

 

I'm with you. The older I get the more my knees are feeling it. I have driven an auto for a couple of short trips and liked it. My next truck probably will be an automatic.

 

I'm driving the Detroit auto DT12. You can't do California stops. You can but the transmission will hunt for the gear. You have come to complete stop or keep it in first gear

I think it's a little slow shifting grears in stop and go traffic but I would not go back to manual.
