I hope the pilot was able to post a message to Facebook so the drivers could see it and make room on the road for him.IluvCATS Thanks this. -
is texting and flying allowed?
-
Anything the pilot deems necessary for the safety of flight in an emergency is authorized, including violating other regulations.. Also, anything that creates an unsafe condition is prohibited. That's regulation 91.13
14 CFR 91.3 - Responsibility and authority of the pilot in command.
§ 91.3 Responsibility and authority of the pilot in command.
(a) The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft.
(b) In an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action, the pilot in command may deviate from any rule of this part to the extent required to meet that emergency.
(c) Each pilot in command who deviates from a rule under paragraph (b) of this section shall, upon the request of the Administrator, send a written report of that deviation to the Administrator.
(Approved by the Office of Management and Budget under control number 2120-0005) -
I don't remember if it's prohibited or not for private pilots (FAA Part 91). I know cellphones are sometimes used in certain conditions to contact air traffic control facilities such as loss of aircraft radio, no response on the radio frequency, etc. I doubt the FAA prohibits texting, but their 91.13 Careless & Reckless regulation is a catch-all regulation that covers anything they forgot to put in other regulations.SugarRebel Thanks this.
