I had a similar idea when I first looked into trucking jobs - and I am still 'looking into trucking jobs', so no experience yet - but here goes what I found.
I liked Schneider, not because they paid the most (I think their starting pay was around .42 for inexperienced team driving, split between 2 drivers) for the miles, but they had insane bonuses, that paid out at 45days, 90 days, 6 mos, then 1 year. Here's the link for it
Team Over-the-Road (OTR) LTL Driver - E-Commerce Freight | New Pay Increase | Up to $0.65 cpm | Pacific
What made it good after looking at everything involved was the following
- 5000+ miles a week, calculates to $1050/wk gross at .21 cpm (if you only do 5000)
-$100/wk for every week over 2 you stay out
-the $10000 bonus is paid out $2000 at 45 days, $2000 at 90 days, $2000 at 6 mos, then $4000 at 1 yr
-they pay off your CDL school tuition at $400/mo (other positions within Schneider pay off at $200/mo)
-you get all the little perks of a mega carrier, with generally older but well-equipped terminals all over the place, great support for new drivers, ability to switch to different divisions, etc.
With all said and done, it looked more like $1300/wk with bonuses. For a rookie driver, that's pretty hard to beat. I don't remember the cpm raise you get at 1 yr, but I think it was to .50 cpm split (but no more bonuses coming...)
I decided not to do it because I didn't want to close my computer repair shop outright, and found a less-expensive school in Phoenix to get my CDL (probably not a Schneider-approved trainer). But for someone ready to dive in whole-hog, its a great opportunity, IMHO.
