About to graduate from a good trucking driver training school. I'm brand new, but at least this school taught me how to actually drive. So now I'm in that proverbial, "foot in the door" place.

I am fine going OTR. In fact want to for a year or so. A Schneider recruiter came to my school this past week and said they offer 2 week on and one week off positions or three week on, one week off positions. I like that ideas as I want to travel when off and relax. But do you have to turn in your truck? I doubt they leave a truck sitting for a week?

How is their orientation? Can I pay extra and get my own room during this two weeks?

How is their OTR training? How long etc?

Any other tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Where are you located at?

I'm about to start orientation in Phoenix next week with Schneider.
I must say I've never heard of those week off arrangements. That's news to me.
Are you sure it's not two or three weeks on and one weekend off, as opposed to week? Because those are the work arrangements I've heard of.

Schneider isn't worth going to for tanker training. Try Gemini, Trimac, or Superior Carriers for a start up tanker company.

I started with Schneider, in a van, dedicated regional position a few years ago. I wanted to go flatbed out of school but I'm glad to have started with a dry van instead. School teaches mostly how to past the test but driving everyday you will experience many situation you aren't expecting and mistakes will happen. I liked not having the added worry about load securement or liquid tank sloshing issues.

As far as the company goes, I was impressed on almost every level. They will take you in and teach you to their standards and stay with you until you start to prove yourself. I went to orientation in Indy then worked with a trainer on my account for a week then back to Indy for finalizing the orientation process. It wasn't bad except sharing a hotel room with a sleep apnea guy. Once back to my account I road with a mentor for a few days until I picked up my truck. From there on my trainer and mentor were a phone call away 24/7.
Good Luck with whatever you do just be safe, take your time and keep the shiny side up.

@gentleroger is gonna be your best hook up. But, yeah, probably gonna have to clean out your truck if it's gonna sit for a week.
I started with Schneider straight out of school 7 years ago. Been with them ever since.

Thanks everyone for answering here. A few more questions

    1. If you offer to pay extra, can you get out of having to share a hotel room during orientation?
    2. During OTR training with a mentor, is it pretty much truck moving and trying to sleep, etc, or do you stop and actually get to sleep like at a hotel, or? I'm not one to sleep well in a moving rig. I worry i'll get no sleep and burnout during mentor training.

    1. I imagine they will, most folks do.
    2. You and the trainer are awake and moving at the same time......pretty much like a solo OTR job would be. You both crash at night and get up in the morning and roll on.

Thank much for the continuing answering of my questions. Got a few more.

    1. What are Schneider trucks equipped with? Do they have APU's? Are they satellite and wifi ready? Do they have cameras inside? Fridge, microwave, television? If not, can you add them yourself?
    2. I see they have flexible, "part time" driver positions where basically it seems you can tell them how long you want to stay out and how much time off you want, of course turning the truck in at your main hub. I would love to drive 3-4 weeks straight and then take a full week off. Anyone ever done this? I like to travel, and this would allow me to make a full time income and still hop a flight and go travel when off.

I wish I could remember anything about Schneider other than the French fries in the Charlotte OC were really tasty
