I was the yard jockey tonight and thought of something. If I really hated everyone I could lift all the trailers way up and then crank the gear all the way down before dropping them lol. How many idiots you think would just back up without looking and get the pin stuck in front of the fifth wheel? I'm betting more than one lol.

I've done that to a driver or two that pissed me off. The key is to get it just high enough so they don't notice it, but still high enough to where the king pin barely grazes the fifth wheel. Then they have to crank it all the way up to see if they can go out from underneath it first. We had one driver that was so oblivious to it that the front of the trailer hit the back of his cab.
Experienced driver will use dunnage and their air suspension to manipulate the height of their trailer to get out from under it. It's still time consuming as hell.misterG, LoneCowboy and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
That or park them really close together. I had a friend who did that when he was a yard jockey for Advance Auto in Salina, Kansas.FlaSwampRat and road_runner Thank this.

Does anyone elses company not buy new pallets and just get the junk ones repaired? I swear the company uses balsa wood and trim nails to fix them. Everytime you pick one you breaks and gets stuck under the jack, doesn't matter where you line it up.

Varies by company and even barn. I know @MACK E-6 once said that his company makes their drivers buy their own tools. At Reddaway we had plenty of company owned jacks (plus spares due to our driver shortage). At Holland we have a few extras but never enough for everyone. People tend to "stash" company jacks in random places the night before so they have one the next day.
I refuse to buy my own jack. They are designed for one purpose and one purpose only and that is to move a customer's freight inside a company trailer. I would have no use for it if I moved on to a company with their own jacks or if I left the industry all together.Gearjammin' Penguin and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
Not even for an adult sized scooter for your neighborhood?Last edited: Oct 9, 2019

I would never use a pallet jack as a scooter... Or skateboard. Especially not at night when I am on my own on the dock trying to milk an extra half hour of OT. That would be against company policy.Bob Dobalina, Cardfan89, misterG and 3 others Thank this.

Yes, that's why I said "in your neighborhood", as in, if you left the industry all together and had no use for it.FlaSwampRat Thanks this.

Sky rise deliveries in downtown Columbia. Fun times dealing with city traffic.
Cardfan89, FlaSwampRat and McUzi Thank this. -
I already have this thing called a trike. It is designed to do exactly what you are suggesting. And no, I am not too old for it. Don't judge me.
