I cant believe they haven't figured out how to sneak that 7th digit onto the factory odometer to keep it very clear how many miles it has. (Outside of fraudulent tampering of course)

It might be for the same reason that a lot of companies and government offices have horribly outdated software. It is very possible that the software they use in their hardware has changed. Their new software guys don't know the old code. It would cost an arm and a leg to have someone come in freelance to do the work.
That's why there is still COBOL in the world. -

I had a 03 Columbia. It showed it. It went from 999999.9 to 100000 0. Had a space where the decimal point used to be and didn't show tenths anymore but the miles kept going up. Had 115900 0 when I quit. Even more amazing was that the engine was a Mercedez.
Cat sdp and HoneyBadger67 Thank this. -
My w900 shows 1 million 340,000 ish miles.
But not all vehicles have that capability. Specially older vehicles.
There's also a law that vehicles over 10 years are exempt from miles.
I don't know if that's included in the federal odometer act of 1972. I"m too lazy to dig that up right now. -
Perhaps the manufacturers put a 7th digit on trucks they know will last that long (like Volvo) and not on ones they know won't.
You're welcome. -
No it’s not illegal as long as it is disclosed...although in some states it doesn’t matter at all
HoneyBadger67 Thanks this. -
