Can you get a 34 with class 8 hazmat? Would it have to be all off duty or the same as everyone else with 34 being any combination of sleeper and off duty?

Are you asking about the ‘relieved of responsibility’ for a hazmat shipment? I don’t believe class 8(corrosive), falls under those that category. Certain classifications of explosives, radioactive, munitions, and possibly some poisons require someone to be ‘within eyesight’ of the cargo vessel unless at a ‘safe harbor’. Best to consult the shipper, and that orange ‘Bible’ you should have with you.

I guess. I thought the requirements were for all hazmat like they're all the same. We just started doing hazmat here and was offered a load I could "get a reset" on that's class 8. Wasn't sure if that was realistic. I was under impression everything had to be driving, or on duty except for the time spent sleeping in the sleeper. Can't log off duty except for the half hour break with exception of those items you named.

You can leave hazmat unattended. Your parking needs to be secured.
tscottme, Snow Hater and Stringb8n Thank this. -
You do not have to remain in attendance on any Hazmat loads except Class 1 Explosives. You can park at a truck stop and leave, come back after your 34 and go. Or stay with the truck and log off duty and sleeper.ColoradoLinehaul, tscottme, Opus and 2 others Thank this.

Thank you for the straight answer. I was confused and wasn't sure I could log off duty or sleeper for 34 hours with hazmat. But if it's only class 1 hazmat that you can't do that with then I should be okay I don't think we haul any class 1.kemosabi49 Thanks this.

if you haul haz-mat you need the 2 books covering the rules and requirements.
company should supply or get at truck stop and tell co to reimburse.
"red book" Hazardous Materials Compliance Pocketbook - Retail Packaging (jjkeller.com)
"orange book" 2020 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG), Standard Bound, Pocket Size | LabelmasterColoradoLinehaul, tscottme and RockinChair Thank this. -
Just remember to leave your B/L in the door pocket or on the drivers seat when you're out of the truck in case something happens and first responders need to access what you're hauling.
tscottme, Numb and RockinChair Thank this. -
Only Class 1 explosives require a Safe Haven parking area, so no. DON'T PARK ON SHOULDERS with HazMat, all classes.RockinChair Thanks this.
