Just a question looking for opinions.
I run I-95 between NY and NC a lot. I usually go 301 just because it’s less stressful and less traffic except for the Waldorf area. Better scenery too.

But in the evenings or early on weekends I’ll run I-95 if it looks pretty good. Coming south, my GPS always wants me to run around the west side of DC on 495. I have always taken the east side. Even for years while in a 4 wheeler. Yesterday, everything was green, so I took the west side around. It’s about 4 miles shorter but has a bunch more curves.
I was just wondering what some of my fellow east coasters do? Do you prefer one way over the other? Why? Just curious.

I hadn't ran that way in about 6 months but, I always take the east side around. The west 6 has more bottleneck points than the east, thats why I stay away from that side.

I avoid 95 altogether if I can. Where at in NY are you running from?

Weat side is shorter and east side is simpler. I'm one of the lucky ones that always goes through at night. At least it is much smoother after the repaving was done last year.

I always run the East side, even though the West side is slightly shorter it never seems that way, and it's usually a wash as time goes.

My last winter running propane I pissed dispatch off so pretty much everyday my 1st load was York, Pa to either Waldorf, MD or Hollywood, MD. I started to absolutely hate Waldorf and all the traffic.

Running down 301 from 50 sucked because all of the lights. If you caught one just right you would play hell getting the truck stopped and not having the surge push you through the intersection, and some of the lights have camera's.

495 to route 5 was also insane because of all the traffic and construction. Being hazmat I was only allowed in the 2 right lanes on 495 and the idiot 4 wheelers trying to merge on and off used to cause me to question my sanity.

At least now they are done with that construction at route 5 and 301 so that area isn't too bad now. Same as 495 and 214.

301 sure is the tale of two roads… From Delaware to the 301 turn off on 50 it’s like “why doesn’t everybody go this way“… Then from that 301/50 turn off to the Virginia line you’re like “oh, this is why nobody likes this way!“ Must be 50 traffic lights!
To me, it’s still better most days to avoid the I-95 madness… 8 out of 10 times that I go 95 at some point, I say wish I went 301…

I counted a few times how many lights there were coming up 301 from Waldorf in the evenings and if I remember correctly there were over 25 and every time I checked I had to at least slow down or stop for over half of them. They must have had them timed for cars and not trucks. Even empty my propane rig was over 40k lbs so I wasn't taking off very fast.

It’s 35 miles from 50 down to La Plata where 301 becomes smooth sailing. I’ll take that over 95 in Northern VA any day.
