Due to budget problems, I am going to be going to a cdl school in a lower income area near me. I already have my permit so all i need to do is get familiar with the truck and practice a few maneuvers... then the actual driven test at the dmv.

This is what they are offering:
5 hours of behind-the-wheel practice driving
use of vehicle for 1 road test

    $580

I am a quick learner and driving comes naturally to me anyway. But I am wondering if a company will look down on this or might prohibit me in anyway.

    mje Thanks this.

That is a bout right but if you have a friend that have a CDL He can lease a truck & Trailer from a leasing company like ryder or hertz for a little cheaper than that But your friend must have a CDL to rent the truck this way you can have the truck for more than one try.

Very interesting thought. But I do not have any friends. I live my life as a loner. I have anxiety issues around people

You won't have any problems finding a job. Most companies will give you additional training anyway. Maverick hires with no previous formal training as long as you have a CDL. CRST may send you to another CDL school, but they pay for it as long as you work for them for 8 months after graduation.
Get a certificate that you graduated from the school. Schneider and Paschall Truck Lines might give you a job. You can start some applications now and list you are a student and the graduation date.

When you take the skills test you need to know how to do an air brake check and pretrip, not just drive the truck. Need to know how to do it properly to pass. Check out your DMV's manual and head over to youtube for demo's. Good luck.

I'm already in the application process with swift (waiting for higher ups approval for previous non violent felony). Just have to wait until November to take my driven test. (Nj DMV backed up)

Spend some after hours time practising the pre trip if you can, till you can sleepwalk it.
Is the backing skills included in the 5 hours?
Would be a much cheaper route, but I'm not sure how strict your DMV is.

Sorry for your situation...but I'm not a fan of short-cuts. Did you try to get some financial aid from an accredited community college 1st...almost anybody can qualify for that....even former felons. Also there are companies that will send you to their school and train you for free...you just have to sign an employment contract with them , seems like you may be trying to circumvent the system because of that pesky felony....

Accredited schools are necessary for any gov't financial aid.

As far as trucking more and more mega carriers are requiring an accredited school certificate. That doesn't mean all. There are ones that will hire you with a barnyard CDL and no experience.

Schools basically have one goal and that is to have you pass and obtain your CDL. The real training starts when a company sends you out with a trainer.

Though the better classroom and road instruction you receive at school the stronger your foundation will be to build from.

The trucking turnover rate is super high. To keep seats filled they train quick and send them out prematurely. It works but a lot of stuff gets ran over! :)

You'll limit some beginning choices but you can still find a job. Being from Jersey you should have no problem. Almost everyone goes to Jersey.

Once your able to hire on with a company that requires 1-5 years experience they look at your driving and employment record and not so much where you got your training.

So if you cant learn it all in 5 hrs you're out $580.00?How much backing practice they giving you?Theres a lot more to getting your cdl then just the driving.Theres the pretrip .backing shifting,up and down shift. You cant get a school loan and learn the correct and more sinceable way?Im not saying youre not a quick learner and you're lucky to have that gift. But in trucking many fail the first time trying to get their cdl.If you by chance do will that school teach you more?If companies never heard of this school or if this school doesn't suppot any companies then you may have trouble finding a company thatll take you. Some prefer so many hrs at a school.
