I was in Richmond, heading south in the granny lane on 95. Not sure what exit but it was an abrupt left hand curve. It was rush hour and raining. As I was heading into the curve I noticed car lights pointing towards me on the off ramp. As I was thinking about why, up comes a smashed up car in the middle lane that is sideways and encroaching into my lane, followed by a car who decided to slam on his breaks and stop on the shoulder in line with the smashed car. "Holy ****", that guy just took my out! So, being unable to stop, I said a "Hail Mary" and proceeded to "thread a needle" between the two. As I was thinking "ok, I got this..." the driver of the smashed car ran in front of me to get away from her car. All I saw was a woman running and then I could no longer see her. Did I hit her? Was I gonna stop only to find her body lodged up in my frame? I didn't feel an impact so was pretty sure she didn't get thrown anywhere. I did run over debris as I went by and then stopped on the shoulder and ran back to access the situation. No one was hurt but I did manage to run over one of the womans loose shoe strings as I went by - the sneaker got yanked off and was laying in the road. Wow. I checked my truck and didn't find any damage so went on my way. Once I calmed down I got to thinking about it. How on any other day I would of been fiddling with my radio, stealing glances at my atlas, perhaps even messing around with the GPS. And I finally understood the whole "distracted driving" campaign concerning commercial drivers. And, whether fair or not, lives are dependent on me...
