Oh god. Can you imagine having to go back to meetings and working all day long for a prick boss that doesn't give you that raise you asked for 5 years back?!
No way. I rather be out here.

    I had to.
My truck was down twice this year. Once in April it was down for 6 weeks after another company driver backed his trailer and took out the front of my truck. No income. Then wasnt even out 3 weeks when I ran the motor hot, blew a head gasket and cracked the head while in Mass. Had inframe done. Didnt get my truck back till Sept 8th.

Between bills and depts owed, I went through $30k like it was nothing. I ran one of my carriers trucks for 6 weeks to mitigate my expenses,.. else I would have been bankrupt. I basically started over from nothing, even using my carriers fuel card to get re-started.

I stayed out,.. had not seen home from July till Dec 20th. So I earned it. In my opinion if you are not willing to work hard to get ahead, particularly in difficult times, then you have no room to whine about losing money and struggling to survive. I did what ever it took to keep the money rolling in. I bit, punched, argued, kicked and scratched to get the most I could out of every run I pulled. Some paid really well, some not so much. I took some cheap loads,.. took my punches like a man.

Bottom line,.. I am still here,.. I have cash in the bank and I am enjoying my time here with my wife and friends because I wont see home again till April/May. I worked too hard to just give up and fold.

Not a knock on Hurst, so don't take this wrong.
That's ten grand a month after bills. Very achievable for anyone with motivation, a brain, and just a bit of luck. But remember the real definition of luck. Opportunity meeting prepared. Nothing lucky about being prepared to take advantage when an opportunity presents itself.

Low freight rates? Freight rates are a Yo-Yo on a bungie cord...but they have always been that way. If a person sets their business model up so they can turn a profit in the worst of times, then they are ahead of the game during the better times. During the '08 recession, the company I was with still turned a profit. Albeit, a much smaller one than usual, but a profit nun the less.

I agree, I see construction of new stores, hotels and businesses all over the place. The economy has cooled, but I really don't think we have to worry about another '08 type recession right away. Hell, I am so confident that it is a ways off that I just changed companies 2 months ago, and am doing o.k. The only way I'd quit now is if I won the $300m lottery jackpot.

My wife asked me when I planed on quitting procrastinating. I told I'd get back to her. I refuse to quit annoying her. Oh yeah, not quitting my driving job either. I may take up rickshaw driving on my down time though. Just a thought.
