    I use to be a lumper n all sysco have them there is 3 diff lumper services they use nationwide. Also sysco makes $$ off then for being there.. Glad u didnt have to unload it if its the frozen Tyson load u WOULDN'T NOT wanna be doing that your first time. Use to come into my sysco 4-8timez wk avg 22-3000cases breaks down into 70-100pallets only comes on 25-30. Paid good to do n only took me about 2hrs but I was fast at what I did most guys 4-6hrs on that truck

    I have always been right up front with every company I've worked for. I do not fingerprint anything. You can call me lazy or what ever you want, I don't care. They ordered it supposedly because they need it, they can unload it. I'm not responsible for making the products "fit" in their outdated facilities nor am I responsible for making their pickers life easier. This is the traditional way of forcing drivers to perform cheap labor. If this is a problem for a prospective employer, I will move on. I'm a driver not an illegal who works for peanuts because I have to. Let the bashing begin, I don't care.

    Not lazy, you're just one of the main reasons that drivers stopped getting paid for anything other than mileage / piecework.
    Totally false... you are an employee of a carrier, the consignee contracts with the shipper, the shipper contracts with the carrier and THEY decide between themselves what the carrier is responsible for and the carrier tell their employee and or driver (you) what you will or will not do or are responsible for in that warehouse and for that load. For the most part, most carriers contract with lumpers or pay them to unload loads.. but as the OP pointed out and like I have experienced. Sometimes there ARE no lumpers, the lumpers are extortionists or the company will not pay for lumpers on certain loads.
    More malarky, if you get in and move the freight and dont screw off, unloading freight can make a load pay rather well. AND from the looks of far too many drivers, some physical labor would do them a lot of good!
    I realize that you don't care.. not caring is why this is a career for slobs and steering wheel holders now.. all the good pay is gone and all the good companies are few and far between.

    I love pulling into a receiver and having them ask me if I want to hire lumper... Uh NO... Luckily I work for a carrier that allows the drivers to do it IF they want... Makes for a nice check that week and burns a lot of calories... Doesn't take long either... I normally unload a trailer a heck of a lot faster than any lumper service....

    I hauled tires for the first three years I drove.. then on to hauling general freight around CA.. HATED baby food loads and candy loads.. but the rest weren't too bad. If you had a plan and worked the lane, it was good exercise and you actually spent time out of the truck and with other people.. helping other drivers etc..

    I have a good question......

    Lets say you pull into 1 of these grocery warehouses, Tired. They want the Driver to unlload,breakdown,Whatever.....If I Refuse then what?

    Will they Refuse the load? Do they Not need that product?

    I mean really folks......If everyone said NO to unloading and beaking it down, Your Lives would be better huh?


    I do Flatbed work which is WORK...But my rates reflect what I do. Im scared most of you nguys are NOT getting a fair share for unloading... And $100 to unload for 4 hours is NOT a fair share considering a Lumper charges what? $200-$300 bucks? Lets wake up grocery haulers, Demand Big Bucks to unload OR dont unload it. If Consignee says they will Refuse..Have them Sign Refused... Grocery Stores in that area will suffer a day or 2.

    You know what Hotshot ,I have 34 Yrs. of accident free experience in this industry. I have always presented myself in clean, professional manner at all times whether at a customer, truck stop or anywhere else. How dare you pass judgment on me, just who the hell are you? I'll match my skill, ability and knowledge with anyone and especially you. You can ram your Large Car attitude right where it will do the most good.     By the way, I've dealt with more lumpers than I care to admit, and I know how it works. In other words, if the company doesn't pay lumpers they can call you.

    This is just a story, not a suggestion. As about a 2 week rookie when I arrived at my first grocery warehouse and they told me I would have to break down and re-pallet the entire (dry) load or pay a lumper to do it I told them to guess again, I'd just take it right back where I got it and they could do it, and I meant it. I pulled out of the dock and was closing the doors when they came running out and agreed to do it themselves. The only reason I got away with that with my carrier was because at the time I was as ignorant as any driver that ever took the wheel, I didn't even have the first clue what "lumper" meant.
