Was in Miami, FL today backed in a dock getting loaded. I was hanging out by my truck listening to my ipod, standing infront of the bumper, when I felt something brush up against me. I look behind me and there's a trailer door within a couple inches, so I jump forward and decide it's probably safer up in my driver's seat. There's a lunatic who doesn't have any regard for other's safety and he's trying to back in a dock next to me.

I'm watching him pull up, back a bit more, pull forward, back up... the dock wasn't even that hard to get into, but he was blind side backing (a big no-no), and there was room for him to turn around the other way. After a couple more attempts I see him get close to a trailer that's sitting in a dock, he gets closer, and closer, and closer, and BAM! He was probably backing at around 4-5 mph. Way too fast if you're in a tight area and can't see what you are doing. Not once did he get out and look.

It wasn't one of those barely scratched the side situations, this dude was WAY off. The right rear corner of his trailer hit the center of the dropped trailer. He SLAMMED into it. I heard a crunch and I sat in my seat watching, in disbelief as he pulled forward and didn't get out to look at his damage, probably hoping nobody noticed. Turns out he ripped the entire electrical box and glad hands off the front of the trailer. I wasn't going to talk to him because he was one of those.... lets say non-english speaking folks. So I took it upon myself to go inside and alert the supervisor to what I had just witnessed.

As I got done explaining the situation and the supervisor went outside, the guy was dropping his trailer and about ready to leave. If I didn't speak up, he would have gotten away with the damage that he did to some poor other company's trailer.

I hate taddle telling people, I get upset when people do it to me over silly stuff (forgot to chock a tire, didn't use a signal one time, etc) but i think this warrants some outside party involvement. I typically stick to myself and prefer not to put my nose into other's business, but I know that if I had to goto a customer to find a preloaded trailer sitting in a dock, with the entire front glad hand assembly farked up, I'd be pretty pissed off.

What do you think? Was I in the right or should I have just kept quiet?

Why didn't you get off your duff, and go offer to help the driver?

Who you just said was having soo much trouble backing into the hole.

You did the right thing by reporting what you had seen. But you could have prevented it from happening in the first place by offering to help the other driver.

Markers, I see you're also from Winter Haven. Can't help with the question. Not a trucker yet. Who do you drive for?

Since when is it my job to help other people not be retarded? I back into tight places all the time by myself and so should he. It wasn't a situation that required two people. I got my happy ### in the door just fine.

CCC Transportation out of Auburndale FL, been there 6 yrs. I got my experience there right out of school and the pay is awful. Trying to move on as soon as I can. Governed trucks at 57 mph, annoying ### eaton voard system, getting paid by the load and not by the hour or by the mile. The pay you get by the load is a crock of #####. Like lets say it costs $500 to go from Jacksonville, FL to Tampa, FL, you get 20% of that starting pay, or 25% of it top pay. First off, I don't believe their rate is only $500 for a full load of beer going 200+ miles, especially considering you have to deadhead 200+ miles to even get there. So the percentage you get off the load is a lie in itself. I'd recommend going there, getting your 1 year, and heading for zee hills.

Good for you, I'm sure your mother is proud.

Now remember that being Professional also means offering to help when you see a situation develop that you could help out in.

It would have taken you less than 1 min. to make the offer. You could have saved that driver the embarrassment of having a preventable accident on their record, instead you were ##### lazy.:biggrin_25513:

Another thing, he no speaky english. It would be different if the dude leaned out the window and said "HEY MAN, how close am i to that trailer?" but he didn't. I also didn't realize he was about to run into the trailer until it was too late, he had only made 3 pull ups before hitting the trailer, which is a normal amount of time for me to not think anything of it. Had he been there STRUGGLING for half an hour, of course I'd have helped.

Am I supposed to go and help everyone who does 3 pull ups holy crap I'd never be able to leave. One guy would arrive and start backing up, I'd help him. I'd get loaded, then another dude would start backing up and make 3 or 4 pull ups, but I can't leave even though I have my paper work, I'd have to help that next guy, and then i'd think it's okay to leave, but lo-and-behold another guy shows up 2 min later who has to make a couple pull ups, oh man, gotta help that guy too!! Guess I'll never get anywhere today. Seriously dude, there's a big difference between someone who has been backing up for half an hour, and someone who has been doing it for a minute or two. This man had made 3 or 4 pull ups at most. Do you jump to someone's aid that fast? I don't think I've ever been at a grocery store like publix or winn dixie with a whole row of trucks sitting there and seen a driver get out of his truck and go help someone unless they were really messing up hardcore. And I didn't think this was anything out of the ordinary until he made a bee-line in reverse for the front center of another trailer.

You watched him back into the other trailer. You said so yourself in the OP.
You could have done something to help prevent it in the first place, 3 to 4 pull up means that it took him at least 5 min. in which you could have had plenty of time to attempt sign language.

Get where he is looking and wave at him. It works, I have done it.
