I recently switched from OTR to Local within the same company. OTR is paid CPM, while local is paid hourly with OT after 40. I made more doing OTR for roughly the same amount of log book hours... But I enjoy being home almost every night with my family, so its worth it.

That was multiple questions and I will do my best to try to answer as many as possible. Simply showing up each day ready and willing to work is half the battle anywhere. As for your weight I'm not sure how much effect that would have. Some big guys can really move. I also don't know the extent of your back injury. You should be okay though. I typically average between $2,200 to $2,500 gross. Sometimes I can get over $3k when the stars and planets all align in just the right way. Then some weeks are slower than others sometimes resulting in $1,800 weeks. Usually around Thanksgiving there's a slowdown then at the beginning of the year. Some companies will house drivers in a man camp. The man camps are actually pretty nice. They have laundry facilities, a cafeteria serving up food and a gym on location. Most companies however have sleeper trucks. If the truck has a sleeper then that's your housing. Most drivers work 3 weeks then take a week off. Some live out of state and will take 2 weeks off after 6 weeks of working. They typically have different schedules and allow you to pick your schedule. The 3+1 is the most popular I think. Of course you're not paid for that week at home.

Hey all, first time posting here and figured WTH, might as well throw my 2c in. I drive for a manufacturer-direct company, so my workload is a little different. I average 1800-2300 mi a week and 55-60 hours a week, but then again in that 5 day span I'll make 8-16 deliveries sometimes all in the same town. Hourly pay is the only way I don't get screwed, but that doesn't mean I have someone breathing down my neck or slack off all day for that matter. I'm trusted to take the product where it needs to go, pickup materials and get back home in a given time frame. If a problem arises that would affect my timing (breakdown, weather, road closures etc) I let the boss know and continue on my way. I don't get paid the best but for a newbie I'm certainly not complaining.

All that being said percentage pay does look attractive. Mileage not so much, at least not at what most of these places are offering as a starting wage. I know how to plan my trips and meet deadlines. Being pressured to make as many miles as possible due to those miles being my paycheck rather than the load itself sounds like a recipe for fatigue to me.

Since you quoted my post, I’ll just mention that I was referring to OTR. Their are those that feel hourly would work for OTR drivers. That’s where I disagree. In your type of work it’s probably the best means of pay.

Ah gotcha. Yeah I suppose I'd tend to agree hourly might not work best for OTR, especially if I step back and think about the reality of it. Personally I'm willing to bet regardless of how I was paid I'd run the same, That being doing everything in my power to make appointments and stay ahead of schedule. Although I realize not everyone has that same train of thought.

I’m the same way, no matter how I get paid I’m doing the best I can and not wasting time. I just don’t like the implications of hourly pay versus paid by the job, which is really what CPM is. If the pay is not acceptable I go elsewhere, as I did when I moved on from the first trucking company I worked for to my current one. I’m satisfied with my pay now. Could/should it be more? Probably, but it’s enough to keep me in the seat for now.
