I purchased a 2023 Peterbilt 389; however, it was built when the heater core was unavailable.
I have since received the core and had it installed. The heater works; however, it does not heat the truck.
The mechanic plumbed the exhaust into the vent used during regular sleeper heater operation.
The area around the unit becomes hot; however, the hot air does not enter the sleeper; it pulls air in through the vent. The steel exhaust outside under the sleeper is working.
I'm sure further adjustments to the installation are needed to resolve this; the question is where to start.

The Espar heater in my 23' 389 puts out through a vent very close to the heater near the floor.
I imagine there isnt enough "umph" volume from the bunk heater to make it up through the sleeper hvac ductingducnut Thanks this. -
That's the same vent I'm having an issue with; the hose runs from the heater to it.
However, when I placed a lit incense stick next to the vent, the smoke went into the vent, not out.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
I had an Espar in the '01 KW - I don't think they were designed to be plumbed into the existing sleeper ducting.
It had a separate heated air vent to the sleeper.Siinman Thanks this. -
Then it's plumbed backwards - from memory the Espar had an intake drawing ambient air wherever it was installed, and the hot air blew through a port into the sleeper.
Did your mechanic read the installation instructions? It's not that difficult. -
Heat will come out the square end, intake is the tapered end.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
I have an Espar D2,the air duct just makes a loop from below the bunk near the floor.I think it's a 2" duct, maybe a little bigger.Air coming out is really hot if it is set on high.
ducnut Thanks this. -
They blow hot air out. The front of heater right into the sleeper just like 4 in tubing. I would not be surprised if I melted plastic if blowing hot air into sleeper vents. Plus the fan probably not strong enough to blow air thru sleeper vents

Espar also makes coolant heaters which heat coolant and run it through the standard HVAC ducts.
Freightliner's parksmart system uses those heaters, they are Espar d4 and d5's. I dunno if Peterbilt ever used those.
Currently Espar is not shipping replacement units to the USA because of tarriff pricing. Freightliner dealeras are out-of-stock.
I know, and have froze my buttocks of this winter because I need a replacement espar d5ws for my 2020 cascadia because the coolant flange busted. -
Say what? I don't know if the parts store i use had stock or if they got it new sometime ago, but i purchased a brand new espar d5swc for my 2016 cascadia, here in Ontario, Canada. Come to around 1000$ US + labour. I feel your pain. These heaters are very, very, temperamental! they seem to last about to years and they need a cleanup no matter what. I am on my 3rd. And yes, i do multiple full speed/heat cycles year round and it doesn't seem to mater.
This new one got put in, in the summer, and buddy did not put the brand new heater pump that came with it so it started getting clogged with soot and now i am having issues getting it started. (already changed the fuel pump but now the unit is iffy.....)
All this to say that you may luck out buying one in Canada if you need it and you should also check ebay. There's plenty of new and use spares!
