Greetings fellow truckers... Im flirting with the idea to go back over the road after my two year stint with LTL.. Local in DFW, isnt what that is... Now baby 3(which is why I came off the road) is now a growing toddler, bills are piling up, child support is a strain, my 2 older kids are entering high school(my daughter next year, my son in 2), .... I made ok on the road, but I know there is more to be made else where. Flat bed and specialized is looking good to me now. I considered Lease Op, alot of you here are at each other's neck about it. Some say it's ok, others say they'll rip you off and it'll be better to save up a down payment.. Since being divorced, and local, I had to continually dip into savings I did have to catch unexpected expense, until depleted... I cant save a down payment due to the fact Im now virtually living check to check...I cant save up $5000-$8000 as a company driver... I have 11 years driving experience, 6 of that OTR.. And every company I talk to is offering .38 - .45 cpm Dedicated and OTR for van and Flatbed... TMC is offering 27% of freight cost for a company which is SUPPOSED to be equivalent to .46 a mile... I just want to make a living beyond child support, and still be able to put all 3 of my kids through college, and buy my first home...and save up.....
From van to flatbed?????

Old Dominion is one of the better paying companies for OTR. The teams running California make about .67 cpm for each driver; not split.
You mentioned TMC; probably do OK there on percentage pay.
Trimac drivers on the "Elite Fleet" make over $100K per year if they run hard. It's coast to coast.Natethetrucker04 Thanks this. -
Walmart pulling van. Starting pay around $80,000. They just upped it from $72,000. Got a friend who just signed up and yup, those figures are correct.

Savage Companies is local, home every day and pays $220.00 daily hauling locomotive fuel. Maybe they have an opening in your area.

Flatbed freight is horrible right now, I have couple of friends doing that and they sit a lot lately. Should be good again when spring comes I guess

Do you have any suggestions for a person just starting out? I am looking for a school and a trucking company. The company doesn't have to own the school. I am looking at running team with a team mate that has 21 years under their belt. I don't want my team mate to be put in a financial bind until I get my year experience in. What route do you think I should go? I want to run box until I get my experience then we are looking to team on tankers. Should I run solo or team the first year? I live in Northeastern Kentucky.
