Roadrunner... Some have it and some don't. You obviously have it and are succeeding. A good investment of money and time for your profession! But you see these folks day in and day out on our roads that lack the skills. Its by no means the majority but its the larger people eater companies or bottom feeder companies that throw these poor b@$tards in the fire!

Lol. Guess I did well cause I wanted to do this job. I did not sign up for the money. I just wanted to drive. I agree, most guys don't know what they are getting themselves into.

Bingo! Its Fight, Flight, or Freeze! Those that rise to the daily challenges will succeed. Those that run or are indecisive will fail and go back to whatever job they had before. People think this is easy! You see a ton of Lease drivers fail because they cant grasp the business aspect! Time management, trip planning, routing, fuel, weather, fatigue, a lot more than holding a steering wheel involved!

Tanker companies have their own training specific to their needs. The tanker company I worked for sent me to their one week tanker school in another state, then put me with a trainer. I was with a trainer for a month doing dry bulk and liquid. The trainer told the terminal manager that I just wasn't getting it. I told the terminal manager I need to be cut loose on my own because the trainer is impeding my learning. The terminal manager sided with me and off I went solo and never had a problem. Most were acid loads. It's not as if you're the lead astronaut on a Mars mission; it's just a tanker job and not too complicated at all. I loved it and most tanker yankers love their job and make very good money.

Yep, so true! I love pulling tanker. The only difference (related to driving) is getting used to the surge. Some liquids I load are light so I can top off the tank and there's hardly and surge. The heavy liquids get ya good sometimes. Especially when cut off and ya have to stab the brakes. I've seen quite a few guys come and go because they do not like the surge.

While I appreciate reality, there are a ton of threads in this forum that warn, complain and in general dole out "reality". I feel that my question was valid, and I hope I've conveyed in all my posts how critical we feel education, experience and the importance of choices you make each step of the way are within trucking.

I can also, assure everyone that both my husband and I do in fact have "God given common sense and intelligence" along with a life time of real life experiences and education. I would also go out on a limb and assure folks that as a retired military aviator safety is practically his middle name. I suppose the reality of it is we'll find out after the fact if this is the right career path, but it won't be for going into this industry blindly.

For those that have assisted in answering my training question, thank you again.

School is a scam to separate you from your money. Either directly or through tax dollars. Get your CDL the old fashioned way-- study the book to get your permit and then rent a truck for the road test. That is what I did and I was hired by a reputable oilfield service company with NO CDL experience. I am now in their training program with a mix of guys who have been driving for over 10 years all the way down to guys who just have their permit.

Some guys went to trucking school, and guess what? They stick out like a sore thumb while they are doing the exercises because they drive worse than the ones who have never driven.

That you need to go to truck driving school is 100% a myth. Save your time and money.

The other myth I see on here all the time is people complaining that they can't get hired even AFTER going to school. "No one will hire you without 2 years experience because of insurance!" Garbage.

Your husband was Navy, right? The Navy refers to their pilots as "aviators." He will have a smooth transition into tankers, don't worry.
