I am new here and I really want to learn about the trucking industry as much as possible. I am studying for my CDL and going through school. I have big plans for this career path. I want to create multiple threads to help me out on my journey. My first question: Is it recommended to get a Hazmat material endorsement on my license? I have heard from mentors and other truckers to get it to open up more opportunities but I would love to hear from others. As well, what are the first jobs I should apply to right away? I am based out of CT. I am paying for myself and not through a company to avoid locking myself into a contract with Swift and etc. Thanks.

I have my hazmat, gonna let it go when it comes to renew.
To much hassle.
Gotta retest all every time you renew license, though it’s better than every 2 years.
Then around here gotta drive 100 miles to get fingerprinted every time you renew, that goes back 10 years, but they need your 150$ fingerprint plus $10 for book to study haz, plus the license renewal.austinmike Thanks this. -
You came to the right place to learn. Dozens of drivers on here willing to help.

Which town/city are you near?

How many hours is the cdl school you're attending?
Yes, get all the endorsements including hazmat. Even reefer drivers sometimes get a hazmat load, such as paint. The serious hazmat loads go to companies that specialize in that and they don't hire new cdl school grads. -
I would get all endorsements you can to start out , makes you look like a more serous candidate when you go for you first and second jobs.
I did let mine go because I ended up not needing it as I became more specialized but it helped me land that first jobaustinmike and Chinatown Thank this. -
We can give you names of companies that hire new cdl school grads.
Also, depending on the town you're in or near, there may be even more companies, such as Old Dominion Freight Line. -
You mentioned conestoga trailers, I don't know of any companies pulling those that hire new drivers. Maybe someone else on here does though.
Roehl Transport has curtainside trailers
CDL-A OTR CURTAINSIDE TRUCK DRIVER JOBS
In Roehl’s OTR Curtainside Fleet, you’ll haul freight across much of the country. Curtainside allows you to protect and secure the customer’s freight with much less physical demand than flatbed without the tarping. Arrive at the customer, pick up the load, secure the freight, then slide the curtains closed. It’s as easy as that! No experience necessary - we have paid cargo securement training.
