how can I get a split reset?

    Sorry 8th note but you are incorrect. The 8 hours only extends your 14hr clock by 8 hours. It will not give you any more hours than what you had when you started the 8 hour sleeper break.

    example: you start your 14 at 0001, 14hr clock will expire at 1401. After driving 5 hours you go off duty at shipper 2 hrs. Drive 4 more hours and go into sleeper. It is now 1101 and you have 3 hours left on your 14. You spend 8 hours in sleeper. The time is 1901 but your 14 has been extended to 2201. You still only have 2 driving hours left.

    this is a common mistake people are making with the 8 and 2 split sleeper rule. It will not reset your 14 hour clock.

    No you're wrong. I do it all the time. In your example, if I go off duty at shipper for 2 hrs then drive 4 more and go into sleeper for 8 hrs, I will then have 7 hrs drive time and 10 on my 14. 2+8=a 10 hr break. It doesn't matter if you split it 2-8 or 8-2.

    If that is your interpretation of the rule and you are willing to do it that way then fine. However, if you would go into any scale and ask a dot officer to explain it to you they will explain it the way I did. Also that is how the green book puts it. But I will never use it because of the confusion.

    Sorry tow614 but 8thnote has it correct. I know it is hard to imagine but some of the DOT inspectors misinterpret this rule also, so you cannot trust what they say 100%. Using the split can be very useful if you take the time to understand it. Drivers complain all the time they don't like the ten hour break requirement. Then take 8 in the sleeper. During the day take two hours to eat, shower, and relax. Guess what, you can eliminate the dreaded 30 minute break which everyone seems to hate so much, by taking the two hours instead. You don't "lose" that 30 minutes then. Drivers need to learn to work smarter not harder. The 2-8 split is just a revision of the original split sleeper provision that existed years ago. But since it seems the majority of drivers consider a 34hr reset is a requirement every week and have no idea how to recap hours and work every day for weeks at a time, I shouldn't be surprised that actually understanding the HOS rules is just not going to happen with today's generation of drivers.

    Your statement is almost correct. The 8 hour sleeper extends the 14, and allows the driver to drive whatever driving hours left of the 11 before the break.

    INCORRECT! Drive 5 hours, 2 hours off duty, then drive 4 hours and sleeper for 8. You now have 7 hours available to drive, [the 2 remaining hours of the 11 total plus the original 5 driven before break]. After the next 2 hour break, you will have the 4 hours you drove before the 8 hour sleeper plus any hours you didn't use of the 7 getting to this 2 hour break.

    Correct! You are making the most common mistake drivers do regarding the split sleeper rule. Both the 11 and the 14 get extended using this rule. It can be confusing, when attempting to figure available hours, go back two change of duty status groups. Line 4 does not count against time available to drive, it gets figured into the 14 hour calculator.

    Oh this is so true!!

    Especially when there are non-drivers that don't understand attempting to explain/teach the issue.

    What you do is unplug your e logs. We are men after all. Cut the umbilical cord to your MOTHERS at dispatch. And just drive. If you get sleepy or have to wait, crawl into the sleeper. Don't worry about rules. It is time for us to rise up and cast off the chains that DOT and others are holding us down with. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of trucking. Revolution is the only answer. God is on our side. And remember if we are fired by our companies while we are in this great mission of liberation, we get 72 and a half virgins. (I am not sure if those are drives or steers or a combination). As for law enforcement........

    In the example above, say you're backed up to the dock for 2 hours, and head out driving, why take a full 10 hour break? You will have effectively taken 12 hours off.

    Imagine 2 drivers from the same company backed up to the docks getting loaded at the same time. Shipper gets them both loaded in 1.5 hours. Driver A takes off to the final like it is a race. Driver B chills for half an hour and leaves.

    Driver A runs his clocks out and parks it for 10 hours
    Driver B runs just a few hours and takes an 8 hour break then gets up and goes to the final and backs up the the dock. 1 hour later (remember Driver A had to take a 30 minute break as well) later Driver A shows up wondering how Driver B beat him there.

    Just a couple questions to clear my thought process:

    1. Why does it have to be the same company?

    2. What about Driver-C?

    3. What if Driver A is a female, Driver B is a male, and Driver C is a little of both?
