Err, OTR reefer is nearly as easy as OTR dry van.

Some companies will want one year experience, but others will accept six months.

OP can almost certainly find something hauling reefer, though I agree that at one year, there will be more and better options.

Here is how easy running a modern reefer is.

    Step 1, turn it on
Step 2, use arrow keys to set your "set temp"
Step 3, hit the "accept" key.
Step 4, make sure your fuel level is good. Most reefers have 50ish gallon tanks and need to be fueled often.

Most of the mid-mega size companies have their units preprogrammed to either run continous or cycle depending on the temp or the product. (Instead of step 2 above setting the temp, with some companies, you can choose to set it by product or customer name, and the unit knows what the temp and cycle settings to choose)

It really is that easy...heck, some companies can actually change the settings remotely from the office in case the driver set it wrong.

To be fair, there are parts of the US where getting trailer washouts means a significant number of out of route miles. Especially late night.

For example: Trying to get a washout after a Johnsonville, N.Y. drop at 0100 means a one-way drive of about 100 miles to a not-nearby Blue Beacon, or shutting down at the local AMBest and waiting for the Betty Beaver washout to open in the AM.

The hardest thing you’ll have to do PM wise is top off the reefer oil and occasionally jump a dead reefer battery. I highly recommend a set of jumper cables.

    rabbiporkchop and Zata40 Thank this.

On the flip side... I left my fridge plugged in on home time and it killed my truck battery. I used the reefer to jump start the truck. So there's that. Lol
