    Wait - doesn't that custom critical pay $3 - $5 / mile?

    $4× 500 mile, $2000-$350 fuel = $1650, 30% of which is $495?

    Almost $1 a mile to the driver . . .

    Maybe I'm a bit tired . . .

Ill give yall an example of the run im on now, sorry if I sound uninformed this is my first run and my first otr job all together, I got my cdl 2 years agi and was working a hourly position at a building materials company until 2 weeks ago when they let a bunch of drivers go. So this is my first typical driving job and im lost on the specifics of the job. Ok so this run dead head to pickup is 293 miles fedex is paying $48.60 for that plus $91.15 fuel surcharge. The run from the shipper to the reciever is 203 miles which fedex is paying $332.16 and a fuel surcharge of $63.15 The total miles is 496 and the total pay to the truck is $535.07 so my understanding from the owner is that I get 30% of the $535.07 after the two fuel surchages get taken out.....

Should I stay a few weeks at least and see what happens ? Maybe im getting #### runs because im new ? I did speak to another driver earlier today and he said that I do have the ability to contact dispatch and say no I cannot do it for that amount before I accept the load (to late for the run im on now) but in the future I can call in and negotiate the pay...whuch I guess is good but I cant believe they hit me so low just because im a newbie -_- going to have to figure all thus out quick so I keep myself from getting screwed. So to figure out what a run is paying me is this the correct way to do it since I get 30% after the fuel surcharge. ....

    $535.07 Total pay
    -$91.15 fuel surcharge
    -$63.15 fuel surcharge
    = $380.77

so do I take $380.77 and multiply it by 0.30 on a calculator to get 30% of the $380.77 ??

A seasoned owner operator that knows how to use a calculator will tell you his cost of operating a truck costs approx $1.08 a mile without paying someone else.

You should have asked for and example before starting. If truck owner parks truck at his house, make sure you stick the tank too make sure he not sucking fuel out the tank. Therefore causing you to but fuel twice. This happened to me once and sure this trickery is still common.

    YourPay = 0.3 X (gross load pay - fuelspent)

is how I am reading it.

Gross load pay would be the total FedEx is paying the truck, with all the fuel surcharges, etc, all in.
fuelspent would be the dollar amount you pump into the truck. Let's assume you are at 0.50 per mile, as an example. That would be 0.50 X 496 miles = $248

    0.3 X (535.07 - 248) = 86.12

    86.12 / 496 miles = 0.17 per mile, which is your pay.

I would recommend leaving the truck as empty as you dare before you hand in the keys. Try to pull into the yard as it is stalling from lack of fuel. That would be,

    0.3 X (535.07 - zero) = 160.52, or 0.32 per mile ....

No matter how you cut it, you are not even in the ballpark for what you should be earning to haul this "critical" freight ...
