According to the OSR that did my annual, new MCPs will be coming probably next year. Test trucks with the new units should be arriving in June. These MCPs will have a scanner that you go around to scan barcodes for pretrip. It'll also be tablet based.

So
They'll Barcode all the pretrip points on a truck and driver then scans Barcode to prove he or she did a pretrip.
Dang they want total control over everything!!!
Also they think they be able to prove a driver didn't do a proper pretrip if an inspection arises or an accident/crash, because as SNI says accidents don't happen. -
I wonder, when we are replaced by unmanned trucks, if OTTO (the autonomous truck) has to do his own pretrip or if he has a slave bi-ped robot that gets out and does it for him.
PoleCrusher Thanks this. -
And what happens when those bar codes get damaged to the point where they are unreadable? We all know that in a year that will be a common occurrence and I doubt that maintenence is going to be replacing them.
PoleCrusher, SingingWolf, TennMan and 2 others Thank this. -
Considering the tablets didn't work last year for just HOS I don't think it's going to be something the fleet transitions to in the next year. They're testing a lot of stuff, doesn't mean it's going into production.ethos Thanks this.

Hopefully it isn't 'zonar' our company tried those and it was a complete failure at the rfid scanning pretrips. My boss ended up trashing them >_<
ethos Thanks this. -
I don't have a problem with the pre-trip barcodes in general but in practice it's not going to be as smooth as they think. Is the driver going to have to remove, dirt, mud or snow to get to it? Write up a reason for every unreadable barcode? Will this make pre-trips take longer simply because the driver has to input so much information? These questions need to have satisfactory answers. It won't be as simple as scanning a code and going.
Also, these tablets are going to get abused, dropped or left outside the truck and lost to the road.SingingWolf, TennMan, bzinger and 2 others Thank this. -
I also need at least two hands free to do a pretrip. One hand has the hammer, the other has the flashlight.
tazman74, PoleCrusher, TennMan and 1 other person Thank this. -
if thats the case driver, you dont have 2 hands free now do you?Cledus Snow, PoleCrusher, TennMan and 2 others Thank this.
