Be careful driving on the outside lanes of any non-interstate roads. New Jersey has a LOT of old wooden power poles that are twisted and leaning. Some of them lean far enough over traffic lanes to hit passing trucks if you drive close to the curb.

The toll plaza interchanges in that area can be a real b###ch if you’re not familiar with them and are in the wrong lane to make an abrupt deviation to your needed path. Study them with satellite view prior and have a mental picture of what needs to happen. Things happen fast and the locals don’t have a lot of tolerance for poor SOB’s trying to feel their way around.

Be ready for the jug handles if you've never experienced them before.

A jug handle is used where left turns aren't allowed on major thoroughfares. So you have to look for marked turns [or exits] to the right that put you in a position to cross over or u-turn. Throughout New Jersey and other places in the northeast you will notice a lot of main roads that have no or very few "left turn lanes", and these are all handled with "jug handle" turns/cross-overs

Make sure you have good directions to where you are going. GPS has a tendency to put people facing low underpasses in that area.

Take your time! I’ve been around Newark quite a bit, and I can tell you from experience that you don’t want to miss a turn there. Finding a safe place to turn around will take more time than you want to spend. Just slow down, know your route before you roll, and you’ll be just fine.

What @STexan said about the tool booths is absolutely true. Coming on or off of the the NJ Turnpike you’ll have 10 or more toll lanes all merging back into two or three travel lanes and exits within 100 yards. Just take it easy and expect to be cut off.

It’s pronounced Nork. Extra points if you can drop the “o”. Serious. Newark is in Delaware. Lol

Like others said take your time & don’t get worked up. Them cars will try to push you around until you let them know you ain’t playin. Stand your ground, and do your thing. The ##holes can wait a darn minute.
