Percentage pay-how does it work?

    A good percentage company will have set runs for a shipper that pays above average going out or coming back. I wouldn't deal with a company that survives on all broker loads.

    Last percentage job I had running GA-CA and back I averaged .32/mile going out and .48/mile coming back. I dealt with the same customer going out and repeat customers coming back. It's hard to get beat when you deal with the same people.

    I like it because pay is above average and it cuts out all the BS of wandering if you get paid for this and paid for that accessory pays. You have a job to do at a set rate and you do it. Know what the load pays when you get dispatched.

    Something to carefully consider is that a LOT of the percentage paying outfits do not take taxes out. You have to have the ability and smarts to put aside the money to pay your taxes each quarter if you work for one of them. I personally have known several drivers who have gotten into trouble with the IRS over this. For some reason it's very hard for some drivers to keep it paid and would rather go through hearings and wage garnishments instead.

    first post!

    anyways, my hubby's looking at a job in town (regional runs, all northeast) that pays either:
    $1.00/mile loaded, .90 empty
    or
    70% of the revenue

    ^^
    job is for O/O btw, not company (wouldnt that be nice though...)

    sound like a good deal or not? if so which would be better (this is all i know, it's his world not mine :( )

    percentage means a percentage of what the truck makes and thats after all other things are takein out like fuel breakdowns loading or unloading ect then you get a percentage of whats left.

    Not necessarily. We saw on the bills what the load payed, and we figured our 30% right from there.

    No that’s incorrect a percentage of gross means before anything is taken out otherwise that means the driver is paying for fuel and repairs on something he’s not building equity in so if expenses are being taken out before the driver gets his percentage he is getting screwed

    You beat me to it! I get paid 30% of the load. Additionally, I get paid $25.00 per hour for anything I do work related. DOT physical? Hourly. Unloading? Hourly. Truck in shop? Hourly, etc...*MOST* of the time, I do fine. Buy nothing sucks more than having to deadhead 250 miles back from somewhere because there was nothing coming back.

    Also, if the outfit isn't willing to give you a rate sheet, RUN RUN RUN. That means they're skimming who knows what off the top.
