I wish I could say I was seeing an increase. I had some good customer freight that was local and I could make some good money on. They haven’t had any loads for me in a while and I just ran across one of their loads on the boards from a larger broker. They’re offering about half as much as I was hauling it for.

Yea, they say, “nothing like having direct freight”.DieselDrivinDaddy and Petty Cash Thank this.

My 2 direct customers rates have not increased. But I have set contracts rates with them that was already a good rate. So there was not need to push an already good thing.
The rates that I see going up are shippers pushing freight out onto the spot market because their regular guys cant fill their quotas. So guys like me are getting $3+ a mile from a load a shingles. $4+ a mile for steel. Things that I was lucky to get $1.90 - $2 mi a year ago so I ignored them. Funny how things change.
Hope it stays like this for the rest of the year.
I do fear that we are going to have a landslide of new rookie o/o's this year. So nt sure yet,.. but if that happens,.. expect rates for 2019 to tank until the culling process thins the heard a bit.

Rates off the boards out in my area are only $2-2.50 for flats. I was called about a 400 mile loaded, 150 mile deadhead job. Their offer was 1000, I said 1100 thinking that was still not enough. Never got a call back. Another load hauling rebar 350 miles. Their offer was $600, I laughed and said $900 at least. Broker said no, thanks anyway and that was that. The loads are moving, so someone is hauling cheap. Another one I looked at for a backhaul was 150 miles DH, 285 miles loaded with 5! drops. They listed it as $600. Didn’t even bother calling that one. Maybe it’s since my MC is so new, but I’m not making the rates the rest of the country seems to be getting.

Those rolls of PVC were $2.40 a mile. Wish I could find more of that out here.

If you want the rates, you have to go where the money is.
Why do you think I run up north and the mid west when I live in Fla? Because I want more than $1.70 mi. And lucky to see that.
So yeah, I'm away from home and it sucks. But I can afford to take off for 2 - 3 weeks now and enjoy the money I just banked and still have enough left over to carry me through some rainy days.
Location, location,..... location.
Hursteasytopleez33, HopeOverMope, Paddlewagon and 3 others Thank this. -
You are in Montana. Its like Miami. No matter how good freight it is, it's never good in those black hole markets.whoopNride, easytopleez33 and Hurst Thank this.
-
Exactly. Colorado is the other lack hole. All the rookie o/o's that thought they were getting a decent rate all competing to get out of the same hole.
Learn where to go and where not to go unless the rate is triple what it should be so you can dead head out.
Hurstmurat, stwik, nightgunner and 1 other person Thank this.
