I’ve been a trucker from almost 10 years. I’m finally fixing to take the o/o jump. I’m trying to decide whether to pull reefer or flat/step. I’ve pulled both in the past and there are positives and negatives to both. Which do y’all prefer and why? Any advice is greatly appreciated
Reefer or flat/step

Step/flatbed. Bad timing but not going to bust your bubble.
Dino soar Thanks this. -
Why are people taking jumps when there are no customers to serve at the current times?
If you don't bring your customers then it's tough right now.
People who are in it for years are sitting home now due to no loads availability. I wouldn't start now at all.
Maybe it's better to get just the truck/trailer now with rates going down because some are closing their operations. But I wouldn't open anything now... -
Umm, it’s not that bad. My next two loads pay 4.27 and 4.37 a mile. I can still operate with profits. There are still plenty of loads to truck for Reefer and opendeck. You don’t need direct customers, in fact I only have a few produce buyers that I work with, everything else is spot market that I use. People don’t stop eating. -And there is a limited number of Reefer trailers. The higher cost also keeps drivers from getting into Reefer. That and many of the trucks couldn’t handle time sensitive freight and will require teams. Things can change, but now I’m still doing peachy.

Diesel Dave Thanks this.

I PREFER open deck or dump, unfortunately in this market, what I prefer and what I can make money with (reefer) are two different things at this current point in time (subject to change)

I like hauling a reefer because I'm a psycho who can fall asleep on demand 24/7 when I need to run an odd schedule. Downside is I practically have to push the super models off my steps with a broom when I park, so it's kind of a burden. You should go with the open deck to be safe.

Left specialized open deck for Reefer. For myself, I can do better being more productive with providing premium service in Reefer than opendeck pulling large loads. There can be a lot of downtime from collaboration with shippers, riggers, escorts, local ordinances, and allowed hours/days of operation. Both have been good to me and am glad not to pull dryvan.
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
I have the truck already purchased and am looking at trailers. I have cash in the bank for at least 6 months operating expenses. I’m not looking to get rich quick but I would like something where I can be a little bit my own boss and make the decisions I feel will put me in a path to success

There also plenty of open deck work around my area. We have a wallboard manufacturer not 30 miles from my location that ships all over the country. We don’t have as much local reefer freight but we have enough within 100 miles to keep my busy.
