We are selecting options and I have zero experience with these video systems.

anyone? Good / bad experiences with video side mirrors?

There is no fuse to blow on reflective glass. On a video setup there is more to go wrong

There is no glass to get broken in a truckstop parking lot, either. Also, most of those systems come with a backing display showing where your trailer is headed to. They are gaining popularity in Europe over the last decade...

Maverick has been testing them on their trucks. Maybe post on the Maverick forum and ask there.

Well, if your merging & I can’t make eye contact through mirrors… your fault. There are a few cars using them, no mercy from me when merging. Guess I’m old, still pay attention & try to make eye contact in emerging situations.

The great advantage to them is at night and in wet weather - the video stays clear and sharp. It also moves with the articulation, so you get a nice view down the blind side while backing.

If it's an extra $1-2,000 to add them, I'd do it.

Eye contact with a merging driver... and through mirrors? That is pretty crazy and dangerous.

What are yourselves supposed to tell each other through eye contact... that we are watching each other and not paying attention to the road and vehicle positions hoping for some kind of sign from one eye or another in the couple seconds this is happening in won't result in our vehicles colliding because we were googly eyed at each other?

When merging you are not supposed to be making eye contact, you are supposed to adjust speeds relative to vehicle positions and speeds.

You’re supposed to take in all the info available, not necessarily staring at the other driver. Are they paying attention? Distracted by phone, laptop, chugging beer, etc. As far as eye contact with these cameras, what about a spotter backing you into a tight spot or across traffic. Can they see you ? What about police walking up on traffic stop? I see many downsides to them.

    eye contact In mirror…
    Anyway..
I’ve seen alot more without mirrors now, this that thing above the door area facing backwards…
As long as I’m inclement weather it’s not all covered with spray, or ice/snow… now I’m wondering how they work.

    Oxbow Thanks this.
